GD Ladies - what are you eating?

I need some new ideas! I was an early diagnosis because I have had wonky fasting levels for the last year, despite decent A1Cs. My ob's office gave me a chart with what groups I'm supposed to eat from for meals and snacks, along with ideas for each. So far, I am finding myself eating the same things over and over and over. I eat a ton of cheese, almonds and slices of bread.

I had my follow up visit with the dietician today and got reprimanded for not eating all my servings throughout the day (I tend to ditch my carbs at snack - just because I'm at work and busy and get full quickly. I also skip my dairy - I'm not a milk drinker and have been avoiding yogurt recently). I've also lost a bunch of weight since all this started - 2 pounds in the last week and 10 over the past 4 weeks.

This is a really long winded post, just looking for some ideas of your favorite things to eat. Some variety and items other than the examples on my chart!

Re: GD Ladies - what are you eating?

  • Hmmm...my dietician gave me a grocery list that had some great items on it. What works for me is to divide my plate up into halves. One half being for vegetables and then the other half of the plate, split that into 2 parts for your starch and protein. For dairy, you mainly need calcium so i would suggest things like spinach. i eat salads, cucumbers tomatoes onion salad, carrots and hummus, tortilla chips and salsa. It sounds like you need easy snacks, fruits, veggies pn hand easy to eat on the go. grapes, fruit cups, pineapple.

  • Breakfast is usually 2 scrambles eggs with cheese. Sometimes toast with peanut butter if my fasting numbers are really low. Lunch is almost always a salad with a few wheat thins. Dinner is typically a lean meat, lots of veggies, and a small portion of pasta, rice, potatoes, etc., or an echilada, taco salad, tostada on/with a tortilla. Snacks are string cheese, an apple with peanut butter, 3 graham crackers with peanut butter, carrots with dip, hard boiled eggs, 3 cups air popped pop corn, or cheese and wheat thins. I definitely don't eat as many carbs as what my dietician recommended but my OB is fine with the amount I'm eating. I feel like I always eat the same things, too.

  • Thanks ladies! The dietician implied that kinda sticking to the same things daily was the way to go because I know how my body will react to them. But I am so variety driven! I'm the person who tells the waiter to surprise me at a restaurant and I am never unhappy with what I get. So the idea of eating the same small groups of food for the next 6 months seems daunting.
  • Not sure what your snack carbs are limited to - mine are 30g or under. So here's a list of what I've been having...

Another nod for Fiber One Protein bars
    Greek yogurt
ants on a log (celery with PB and raisins)
hummus and veggies or hummus with crackers
    cottage cheese
wasa crackers with some cream cheese and cucumbers & dill
Mixed nuts with some choc chips (if you have a sweet tooth and/or it doesn't send your sugars high - I can have choc in low amounts)
Berries, esp strawberries, have a really low GI so they're good with a lot of things
    String cheese
    small apple and peanut butter
    Ovaltine in milk
high quality cheese with whole grain or really dense flax type crackers

    Hope that helps!

  • I'm going to have to check out the fiber 1 bars! The protein bars we have at the house are too high in carbs. And protein. Snacks for me are supposed to be 7 grams of protein, 15 of carbs from the starch group and 15 grams of carbs from fruit.

I have Kaiser, so their materials are all a big blanket of info. But, I'm only allowed fruit at my morning and afternoon snacks. Milk/dairy carbs come at lunch, dinner and night time snack (though mine got cut trying to get my fasting # down. It may be added back in once I start evening meds this week). Cheese is never considered dairy, nor is cottage cheese, but do count towards my daily calcium intake.

This was all seriously making my head swim. But having more ideas and products I can check out is helping. I'm stressing less (which should also help! Stupid stress!)

    Thanks!

Looking at the label now - the F1 Protein Caramel Nut bar is 130 calories and has 16g of total carbs, 5g of fiber and 7g of sugar. 7g of protein.

Most of the protein bars we had at home, Luna, Cliff type were way too high in calories and in carbs for me too.

  • Thanks! Trader Joes has a fiber bar that is within my limits as well. They are higher in carbs (18 and 22 grams) but also have 9 grams of fiber. The dietician told me that any fiber over 6 grams should lead me to calculate net carbs so that I don't miss out on the carbs. Net carbs, these would be 9 and 13, which is perfect. The idea of a little granola bar and a piece of fruit for snack is thrilling to me! I haven't been hungry, so all this eating is crazy!
  • I'm very early in my pregnancy and still trying to figure out what to eat but here is what i've been eating lately.

Breakfast: Eggwhites with cheddar cheese and spinach
Dannon Light & fit greek yogurt

Lunch or dinner: Salad (I love spinach so i mostly eat spinach) I usually put roasted chicken into my salad with some olives and light dressing
Baked salmon with broccoli or green beans and brown rice
Roasted chicken (I pick them up at sams club and use them for meals for a few days)
Stir-fry with some chicken or beef and LOTS of veggies. I usually eat it with a single serve cup of Uncle Ben's whole grain brown rice.
Homemade soup with low-sodium broth. I use a great recipe from pinterest for minestrone

    Snacks: Popcorn chips with hummus
Celery, cucumbers and broccoli with some greek yogurt dip
Dannon light & fit greek yogurt
    Graham crackers with peanut butter
    string cheese
