Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Weening the pacifier

We recently started weening my 8 month son from his pacifier. We let him have it in bed (nap/bed time) and car rides. So far he's doing great.
Goal is to have it gone by 1 yr... (Please no sarcastic/rude remarks, this is the decision we have made)
All I'm looking for is any advice or how you knew when your LO was ready... Or did you just take it cold turkey?
TIA

Re: Weening the pacifier

  • We are in the same boat. LO is 8 mo as of yesterday. We only do it at nap time. Still looking forward to advice!

  • Same boat here so I'll be watching for responses too :)  LO has never needed the pacifier for anything other than sleepy times (and the car IF he's tired). I posted a similar question a few weeks ago and most suggested that if the baby isn't waking for the paci several times a night to  not fix what wasn't broken and that 18 months was more realistic.  I know my baby is younger than your 8m old but I can tell he's not ready.... mamas of older babies I know tell me that the child will eventually give it up at sleep themselves, somewhere around 2-3 years old or it is much easier to ween them of after 18m. I personally would like to see our paci gone now but if it helps him to fall asleep easily then I'm not going to deprive him of it. If he has it at 2 still, oh well. At least he's just using it for sleep and not needing it all day long.

  • My almost-2 year old still has it for sleeping. I am not worried about it. He uses it to fall asleep and if he wakes at night, so he's actually sucking on it very little. Our dr said it should be gone by 3 and if he doesn't drop it on his own as we approach 3 we will work on losing it.
