Multiples

Prenatal Workouts

Is anyone still working out through their pregnancy with multiples?  I was very active before pregnancy (competitive in local triathlons) and am trying to judge how active I can be now.  I am 23 weeks with fraternal twins now but wasn't allowed to do any activity from 13-18 weeks due to a blood clot.  I am back to swimming, yoga, and some lifting.  I have a hard time with the directive of "listen to your body" though because I love the pain of a good hard workout.  Did anyone make it into their 3rd tri with workouts with multiples?  I am just trying to get a sense of what I should anticipate in the coming weeks.  Thanks!

Re: Prenatal Workouts

  • I did. I was on the elliptical nearly every night. I also did stretching, and core strengthening exercises that I call reverse sit-ups where you lift your legs instead of your head. I was doing them until I had a c section at 36w4d. I did the same workout with my last singleton also, right up to delivery at 37w2d. I told my midwife about it both times and she had no problems with it. However, I had done the same exercise with harder intensity between the 2 pregnancies also. Just listen to your body. If you feel sick, slow down. Don't ramp up to quickly. My sister ran all the way to the end of her singleton pregnancy. Said she just got slower and slower. After having the baby it was like running without a huge weight attached. She got her body back relatively quickly. For me, I feel like it helped with my weight before and after delivery. I am heavier, and in my mid 30s and I gained almost 40 lbs. I lost that over the next 4-5 months after delivery without doing more than exercising daily (same routine) and nursing the twins. I say go for it mama! Just be cautious.

  • I was a marathon runner before pregnancy. I gave up reluctantly gave up running during pregnancy but I continued to walk through 34 weeks when it became painful to even walk across the house. I also did a prenatal DVD though second tri and occasionally swam and did the elliptical.

  • I switched from running to walking when I got pregnant, and then had my activity restricted at 24ish weeks due to a shortening cervix. I really hit a wall around 28 weeks. In my third tri, it was just incredibly difficult to move around at all, much less exercise. I gained 60 pounds and had to go to PT to correct abdominal separation after I delivered 13 pounds of baby. I walked every day starting about 3 weeks postpartum but I really wasn't able to resume running until around 6 months. Then when my twins were almost 1, I ran a PR in a 10K (still 15lbs over my pre pregnancy weight, but whatever!)

So much depends on your individual circumstances, but I do think at a certain point it will be impossible to experience that workout high. Just remember that it's a good thing to still be pregnant, you want your babies to be big, and you will get it back in due time!
