4 month wakeful! WTH.

Ok so when I read about this I was like "that's bs. My baby is past 4 months and hasn't had any problems with sleep". Now here I am nursing my baby for the third time tonight. He didnt even sleep at all until midnight. Just wide awake. I have had such an easy sleeper before 4-6 hour stretches if not longer every night. Now back to 2 hour stretches if I'm lucky.
Anyone else survive this, going through this, or have any advice to share? I may possibly lose my mind and it is only day two of this. I'm feeling more and more sympathy for the moms I had seen on here who have had this problem from day one.

Re: 4 month wakeful! WTH.

  • Right there with you! It's been about a week. LO will go to sleep but won't stay asleep for longer than 1 or 2 hours usually. It's 3am right now and I'm up for the 5th time.

  • Im up right now for the 3rd time since 10.00. My LO has been waking up about 2-3 times a night for a couple of weeks now and he's not even 4 months yet. I read it can start as early as 3 months and last anywhere from 2-6 weeks. I think I'm just as tired now as when he first came home. I really really would love a good nights sleep... 6 hours would be heavenly.

  • Just getting into this!!! I hate it. Plus she's sick right now so she was eying every hour last night.

I just embrace it. Eat a left over whopper and watch tv. If she's content in her bouncer I'll sleep on the couch until she fusses
  • Our baby has been waking every 1.5-2 hours for two weeks now, and she's only 3.5 months...my biggest worry is that it's going to get worse since she hasn't even hit 4 months yet...she slept BETTER as a newborn

  • Ours lasted about 3 days then started to get better. I am now nursing for the second time. He has never been a great sleeper though.

  • Ugh DS started this the day I went back to work at only 12.5 weeks. I was getting 4.5 to 6 hour stretches then it was back to every 2. He had a good couple nights and then was back to it last night. I fear what may be coming...

  • We are on week 2 of this. Last week he started by fighting naps but was still sleeping ok-ish at night. The last 3 days he is going to bed late and waking 2-3 times for feedings then getting up for the day around 4:30a. The worst part is that it has correlated with me going back to work. Definitely not making things easier. This to shall pass? (But I really hope it doesn't take 6 weeks) ;)
  • We are at 3 mo today and he went from 4-5+ stretches of sleep at night (amazing) to nursing every 1.5-2, with an occasional 3-3.5 hr stretch thrown in. It's been like this for a couple weeks, and seems too early to be three 4mo wakeful period... if it's not...

  • It's been a couple weeks of this here. The other night we got a 4 hour stretch and I thought we were getting to the end, now last night she was up about 6 times. Ugh!

  • Popping in for the first time in months to commiserate . . . YES, this 4 month wakeful thing sucks so, so much.  I am a teacher, so luckily I was on Christmas break, but we are on 2 straight weeks of getting up every 2 hours with DD.  And this from a child who had been STTN (10p-5p) every night for at least a month.  Last night we got 2 good stretches in for the first time.  Hopefully she is turning a corner . . .

  • I feel horrible for you. I think dd and ds1 went through this but I may be blocking it out and for good reason. I'm not going to touch on the twins for fear of jinxing myself. Stay strong hun. It's only a phase.
  • I didn't believe in the 4 month wakeful either until it happened to me. Up until now LO has been very easy to put down at night. As long as she was swaddled she would drift off to sleep within 15 minutes. Every night. She has also been STTN from 2 months. Now she is 1 week shy of 4months and for the past 5 days she has refused to go to sleep. Every night. When she finally falls asleep she wakes up every 2-3 hours. So just know that you are def. not alone and hopefully this will pass soon.

  • I think we're starting on that cycle too. She was a really good sleeper (10-6 or even 7am), but now she won't go to sleep till 11 or 12 and wakes up at 4 and 6 and is harder to put back to sleep. The cute thing is that she's so happy at midnight and gives me the hugest smiles and i just melt even though all i want to do is go to sleep.
  • I'm in the middle of it too, I think. I say "I think" because DD hasn't slept well since her two month shots. I've been getting up every couple of hours at night for over two months. I suppose the only nice thing about that is that I'm used to the sleep deprivation.

In any case, I'm told that this too shall pass. I try not to think about it though since we don't have a good sleeper, and I don't want to get my hopes up.

  • We're on week two and it sucks.  I wouldn't be so frustrated if he hadn't been a good sleeper previously.  I think the fact that I know he's capable of long stretches of sleep is what gets me so irritated.

Yes. This. I got very used to plenty of sleep and we had a good schedule. Now, I feel like I'm going to go crazy before this is over. How did I ever do this early on?! Lol
From 7 am to 9:45 I the longest stretch I have gotten all night. He was laying next to me since my husband left for work. DH may have to find a different place to sleep until this Is over. It is shocking to be excited for a 2 hour 45 minute stretch of sleep.

Extra question: how often are you all feeding? A couple of times I just picked him up and he was just back to sleep so I didn't bother to change him or even try to feed him. Should I be offering the breast even if he seems tired enough to just go right back to sleep?

It depends.  I don't feed her every time she wakes.  I generally send DH in to see if he can get her back to sleep.  If she just won't settle, then I figure she's hungry and I nurse her.  On bad nights, she's up 4 times.  I usually only feed her 2 of those times, which works out to being every 3 or 4 hours through the night.

  • Oh it has been awful! DD slept from 9 pm to 5 am for several weeks in her crib. Then last week started fighting naps and waking after 30 minutes but still slept well at night. Two nights ago it all went to shit. She has been up every few hours and was WIDE awake at 3:00 this morning. I put her in the swing and she just kept kicking her feet up in front of her and laughing! Finally went back to sleep at 4:30 and woke up again at 6:30. Ugh!!

This is me too! I'm scared and trying to just take it one day at a time.
  • We are going through this and have been for the past four weeks. Something's gotta give...
  • My DS is actually past 4 months. He was born August 23rd. I was thinking it wouldn't happen to him since everyone else's LOs had already started it. I was so wrong.

He takes good long naps during the day. His sleep during the day seems pretty much the same except he isn't awake as long as he used to be. If he is so tired, why won't he sleep at night?

  • Right there with you!  My LO would go to bed around 8 and sleep until 3:30 or so.  Now it takes several attempts to lay him down and when he finally does stay asleep after i lay him down he only sleeps for about 2-3 hours.  I have noticed it getting better.  Hang in there!  You definitely aren't alone!
  • Ugh so not looking forward to this. I blocked it out with DS1. ;)

DITTO. Kudos to you guys. I am so fortunate to still be on leave. I pull dd into bed and we bed share til 9am. Don't you how you working moms are Doing it.
I don't know how I'm doing it either.  I got maybe 4 hours of sleep  last night so I'm sitting at my desk with a huge headache and burning eyes.  His sleep has gotten progressively worse every night for the past few nights. I might cry if this trend continues much longer.

  • Up every 30-90 minutes. Second night in the crib so I gave up at 530 and brought her in to bed, cause I'm sick and tired and DH is no help cause she won't have it. She still woke up every hour until 9 but at least I didn't have to get out of bed.

We are going on just over two weeks of this.

When my LO woke at 12.45 last night he wouldn't go back to sleep for about an hour, something hes never done, and then when he finally fell asleep- awake again 20 minutes later. He was up again at 5 and again at 6. 30, when I decided to take him into bed with me. He stayed up until about 7ish and then slept until 9.30 with one feeding somewhere in between, i didnt even look at the time then, just pulled out a boob. Lol

I must have jinxed myself talking about it the other day cause this is definitely worst than its been.
