Update on bloodwork. Wtf veins?

So, you may or may not remember me yammering on in every other post about how I tried to get bloodwork for initial testing last cycle and it took 5 sticks and they couldn't get anything. It was for progesterone and other stuff, so it is time sensitive and I had to wait until this cycle.

So, I go to a different lab this time after drinking loads of water for DAYS and she can't find anything.  She sticks me once and then sends me to another lab downstairs.  They have 2 people look and use the warming packs and butterfly needles, and stick me twice.  The good news is they got enough to get the progesterone, but probably not enough for anything else.  I guess I'll see what they want me to do when I get the progesterone results back.  I'm so nervous because I know that b/w is important throughout infertility treatment!  Wth am I going to do?!?

  • Lol- I'm going to answer here- too tired to find other post. I'm a hard stick too!!! Have been drawn from ankle, wrist, top of hand and forearm. I used be nice and let them check but now I just say, "I'm a hard stick, after years of bloodwork the best plebmotoligists told me not to waste time and speak up, only draw from here or here." I still get the "shut up you don't know anything" look, but it is better than getting stuck 40 times. And I still sometimes have very bad days they can't get anything and I want to kidney punch bc delays me a cycle!!! AUGH!!! So I feel your pain. Makes it worse bc we are male factor infertility, he has huge veins and bloodwork is a two second deal every time and I'm the one who has to get the draws!!! So unfair!!! Anyway, your aren't alone, just be a admant, if this is new for you, you'll learn where a good vein is for you and stick with it till you can't ( my best was in left hand but too much scar tissue formed and they won't take from there now- ugh). But don't let them bully you- it is your body- just because they do this for a living doesn't make them experts I. Your body!!!

  • I'm sorry you are a hard stick.  My veins don't show and are small but they usually can get it with a few tries.  My biggest problem is if I see them do it and the blood flows I pass-out/faint.  Blood draws suck, and being delayed sucks even more.

  • I am so sorry you are going through this. Me too. I know where to tell them to go in one arm or my hand.

Oh man do the hand ones hurt. But they use the butterfly needles and that really helps!

There is one tech who does an awesome job every time taking my blood, first time and it doesn't hurt. But she listens to me and takes her time and that really helps.

I too drink a ton of water days before too and sometimes a juice box right before.

  • That sounds miserable! I'm so sorry. Hopefully someone can find the magic spot and blood draws for IF stuff won't be a lasting issue.
