Scamming & Internet safety ?

So I just got a call from my mom that my 84 year old grandma got scammed today by someone pretending to be my brother. She sent this man $4k before calling my brother to see if he was ok (man said he was in jail and this was his only phone call & had elaborate details). I'm so pissed that this happened to my sweet grandma. I'm also very worried now about how this happened and how to protect myself and family. Anyone have any resources or suggestions for tightening our internet security?

  • I don't have any good advice for you, but the same scenario happened to my H's grandma about 6 months ago. Wrecked her little world.

A man called, said he was her grandson and that he was on a trip to Mexico and got arrested and he needed bail money. She didn't even think twice or about calling his dad (her son) before she wired the money. Geeze, I hope it wasn't the same person. I think she gave him about $2500.

I'm sorry it happened to her too. Totally sucks.

  • So DH and I did some research and "grandparent scams" are very common. Thankfully my aunt's sister is married to a detective and they are very close to my grandma so he is working her case.

  • Mel- I would really appreciate if you could share that info especially about protecting a child's identity. Thanks!!

  • Mel- thanks for taking the time to type that up. We have a savings account in her name but no passport. I also keep our SS cards in a safe place at home. I feel a little better knowing I'm already doing some of these things.
