  Gate check, but put it in at least the red "GATE CHECK" bag.  They will at least protect it from the dirt and grime (which you will see all over your travelbag).  They are very cheap and available on amazon.

  My Vista was broken twice while flying so I would never ever fly without a padded bag for a stroller you care about.  The Phil and Ted's universal travel bag is awesome and fits many different strollers.

  I've gate-checked my City Mini twice with nothing on it. I totally get your concern though.
