Left handed or Right handed

Okay, So has anyone else noticed their LO prefer using one hand over the other? Do babies this young already know their dominant hand preference? Or am I just crazy?  Sophie almost always holds her pacifier with her left hand. She grabs her oball with her left ( but she does use her right as well) I am really curious to see if she is going to be left handed because neither myself or my H are left handed.

Re: Left handed or Right handed

  • DS1 seemed to use his left hand more often than not when he was this little. And when he started eating with a spoon he would use his left hand more often. Now he's about 50/50. I haven't noticed Elliot favoring one over the other yet, though.

  • DD most definitely prefers her right hand. I think you can get a feel for which will be more dominant at this age but I'm just comparing to my nieces and other little relatives. My older niece also prefered the right and stayed right handed, the younger one used both equally and still does. It could change I'm sure but I would say my DD is probably going to be right handed.
  • I haven't noticed anything with DD yet, but DS was very noticeably left-handed by about 18 months. His doctor even noticed it during his 18 month check up. DH and I noticed probably around 9 months or so, when he would almost exclusively use his left had to eat.

  • Hand dominance shouldn't show up until your LO is closer to 3 years old.  If she is already showing a preference, encourage her to use both hands by giving her the toy in the other hand sometimes.  It is actually physically detrimental to have a dominance this early because it doesn't encourage muscle development evenly on each side.  I learned this from months of OT for DS.
This is good to know! I will make sure I try to start handing her things to her right hand too. Thank you for sharing.. I am glad I asked now.

  • CurlingRocks is spot on. Babies don't have hand dominance at this age. However, it's ok to notice a preference. If it's a STRONG preference (ex LO still grabs with left hand when objects are on the right side), then start encouraging use of the other side. Having a strong preference is usually a sign of other things going on. Similar to looking to one side, rolling to one side, ect, watch closely and ask pedi if you're concerned.
