Sick baby :( No BM in nostrils?

3 1/2 week old DD is sick with a cold.  I'm in Michigan where we're snowed in and our pedi's office AND urgent care are closed today.  She started a little cough and stuffy nose Saturday night and woke up coughing more and sounding more congested this morning.  I talked to a nurse at the hospital and I told her I put a little BM in her nostrils and suctioned and apparently I shouldn't do that.  There is an aspiration risk.  Anyone else ever been told that?  I should only use saline drops (which is great and fine) but I've always heard BM is great for a stuffy nose.

I feel like a bad mommy.  I'm hoping the clinic is opened back up tomorrow but it doesn't seem promising.  Luckily, no fever and no flaring of the nostrils.  She's eating okay and having pees & poops.  If anything changes, I'll definitely take her in to the ER.  She was the last of our household to get this nasty thing.  I'm still sick, too.  And on top of it all, I'm supposed to have surgery in a couple days.  Praying she doesn't get any worse and that my surgery isn't postponed because of my cold.

Hence why I should ask pedi and not a nurse.  Haha.  Made me feel like shit.  I mean, come on nurse, it's not like I dumped 3oz into her nostrils and left her there to drown.  It was like a drop or two in each nostril and I suctioned shortly after.
Is that what you do, @Cash?

  • No advice on the BM in nostrils, but if her congestion is bad have you tried sitting in a steamy bathroom with her? Since she's showing no other signs of sickness, this might help up clear it up on your own.

We did do that a couple times today and yesterday.  We're also using a cool mist humidifier.

  • We're using Little Remedies saline solution and the nosefrida.  My LO is just a little stuffy.  I've also heard that a steamy bathroom helps like PP said.

  • saline drops and a cool mist humidifier works great...
  • My doc suggested the BM. I bet nurse was in CYA mode...

  • @SSM, it's no fun listening to LO cough.  And when she's awake she just sounds so pitiful.  I wish I could make it go away.  We have an appt tomorrow but I know pedi will just tell me to keep doing what I'm doing.  I did talk to her over the phone and she said just to watch for fever, nostril flaring, loss of appetite/decrease in pee diapers.
