Is it too late to change my mind on sleep training?

LO is 8 months old and I have not slept a solid 5 or more hours in 8 months!  I'm a softy when it comes to cry it out, and I'm pretty sure I started a bad habit of giving her a bottle to get to sleep and back to sleep in the MOTN.  Is it too late to start the CIO, will it be too dramatic for her to just cut her off the bottle at night cold turkey.  I don't want to make her cry, but this lack of sleep this is really starting to affect my health and mood ( I admit I've been really bitchy lately to the hubs)

  • When we started training our LO to STTN we just rocked him back to sleep instead of giving him a bottle/boob.  Did this 2 nights and he STTN the third.  Not sure about CIO.. we haven't really had to do that so I have no advice there.  GL!

  • Not to late! Maybe you could cut down the amount in the bottle then phase it out and use rocking instead. In my opinion at this age the longer you wait the harder it gets. They just get smarter and more dependent on their routine.

  • No, I don't think it is too late... you gotta start sometime, right?  I don't have any helpful advice, just that!

I'm not a fan of CIO, but then again, I haven't had to do it because he's a pretty good sleeper.  In the beginning, of course I got up with him and offered the boob.  But once he started sleeping through the night, if he got up, my husband is the one to go in and just rock him back to sleep, and it usually works.  If it's me, he expects a meal.  If he's hungry, of course I'm going to feed him - I gauge this on how much he's had throughout the day.  So if he's screaming, and we can't figure out what's wrong, I'll offer.  But most of the time, my husband goes in - but that's only if he's actually crying.  And I know for some, CIO is more like fuss it out, and in that case, we've done it and he usually goes back to sleep.  It helps that he's a thumb sucker, because once we see the thumb go in while watching on the monitor, we know he's on his way back to sleep.

I don't know if this was helpful or not..... but good luck!
This is exactly what we do as well!

If he's just fussing a little/making noise we just let him hang out and he usually goes back to sleep on his own.  If he starts crying my dh will go in and rock him.  I've fed him once or twice in the MOTN but that's usually only if he's sick and didn't eat well during the day.  He's a pretty great sleeper though so we haven't had too many nights like that.

  • It will get way more dramatic the longer you wait!  Wait until she can stand up and call your name and cry for you.  That's no fun.  She might surprise you.  A few weeks ago we decided to pat DD's back instead of picking up to feed right away.  I was expecting more crying, but it wasn't too bad. Now instead of waking up around 3 she sleeps until 5 without waking up.

  • Ugh, you guys make it sound so easy. I feel like I won't get to sleep uninterrupted all night till she goes to college. She hates the pacifier, isn't a thumb sucker, and is a light sleeper who hates naps!
  • My son also hated pacifiers and has never sucked his tumb. Which is one reason we decided to finally help him learn to self soothe. He was a great sleeper from birth until 4 months and 4-6 months got progressively worse until we decided to sleep train at 6.5 months. I don't think it's too late. It was easier than I thought it would be...and so worth it. He went from 30-45 min naps to 1.5-2 hour naps and sleeps from 830-630. (He was waking every two hours)
