Everyone is different about which they like. I would only get one of a couple of different brands to try out.
I liked Grovia best until recently (it has spots to catch poop and as her poop is stinky and has to be prewashed off it's a bit of a pain now, but I still like the fit and hubby only likes this one) and our other diaper is bummis (no spots to catch poop but it's bulkier which is ok now that she's bigger, hubby doesn't like to put the pad in the diaper).
I bought both sets of diapers used, found one on craigslist and the other from ebay.
I love Green Mountain Diapers. We use Cloth-eez pre-folds with capri snap covers. There is a pretty active cloth diapering board on here that has been a huge resource, especially when I started out. If you order from there the first time they give you a free packet with insight and some instructions on CDing. There are also a lot of really great youtube videos - "Cloth Diapering 101" is really informative on all the different CD options out there.
We did a lot of prefolds/covers (Green Mountain Diapers) at the beginning and still use them now when we are just around the house. I also like BG, Flips, and Best Bottoms. All of those brands have held up really well for us. I cloth diapered my first until 7 months and stopped when I went back to work full time. We were living in an apartment and all the quarters for laundry were adding up. I'm using those same diapers now with my 8 month old and still going strong. :-)
