Cloth Diapering

please suggest an overnight solution

During the day was use Imagine Smartfit prefolds size large (15-30+ lbs) trifolded with BB covers.  DD is 19 lbs and this combo, although bulky, works perfectly during the day.  We have been getting leakage on some nights.  Most nights she has no leaks but wakes up SOAKED.  First I was wondering if it is common to have an occasional leak and we should just deal with it or if we should try something new.  And if we should try something new I am open to suggestions.  The things I am concerned about is that I don't think I want to add anything like a doubler to the trifold/cover combo because it's already very bulky and that would probably cause leg gaps.  And also I am concerned about washing whatever we get because we have a HE FL that has not had a good track record at getting things clean.  We had to eliminate microfiber altogether.  So please give me your opinions!

  • Fitteds with a PUL or wool cover. I have TTNNs but many also have good luck with Sbish snapless or OBFs
Are those fairly easy to wash?  Do you think I am pretty safe sticking w/ natural fibers?

  • Okay...so you're going to have a hard time getting more absorbency without adding anything to your diaper. If you have washing machine issues, I would not go the fitted route.

Also, do you mean Blueberry or Best Bottoms covers? If it's Best Bottoms a bigger cover might be needed for overnight.

What I would do is snappi the PF and add a Joey Bunz or Thirsties hemp doubler. I can make a GMD XL prefold pretty trim on my 23-month old with the reverse angel wing fold and a snappi. There is still plenty of room and no leg gaps in a Blueberry Coverall, Thirsties Duo size 2 or Thirsties Large cover for a hemp doubler.

  • I have an HE FL and super hard water. Yet I can do TT NNs. I love them.

Good suggestions!  I never thought about getting a bigger cover.  I use Best Bottoms which are one size so I thought that was the biggest I could go.  I will def look into that.  And work on learning the art of folding/snappi-ing.  And getting a doubler then.  I guess I have an excuse to go into Nicki's.

I have a 4 month old but I find my TTNNs easy to wash.  The inserts and doublers all detach from each other so you are only washing 2-3 layers which would be the same as a hemp insert.  No clue how the Sbish disassembles but I think it does something similar.
    Where do you buy TTNN's?
  • I like the suggestion of snappi'ing and getting a bigger cover so you can add a doubler. Also consider trying bamboo prefolds or hemp flats. Then you could still tri-fold and not add much bulk but would get more absorbency.

  • I use a Capri cover with a bamboo insert over a padfolded hemp flat for my two year old. Some nights I could get away with just the flat, I'm sure. A flat would be much easier to clean than a fitted.

  • Okay, who's been waiting with baited breath for me to chime in? ;) My favorite cheap ON solution is an s'bish bamboo flat (which is really like a prefold) trifolded in a Blueberry cover. It washes up much, much easier than my s'bish fitteds, although I do have to rinse and soak them to avoid ammonia build-up. (Gotta love toxic toddler pee.) I haven't tried any other brands of bamboo prefolds/flats, but I'm sure there are other good ones.

  • So my LO is only 6 weeks old but my ON solution gets me through her 6 hour sleep chunks no problem! I do a prefold jelly rolled and then Snappied. Then I trifold another prefold and lay that in the center of my Flip cover and then put the cover on. I haven't had a leak yet! :)

Best Bottoms run small for one size covers. Blueberry Coveralls/Capri or a Thirsties Duo size 2 will give you a lot more room to work with.

  • If you like the pre-fold/cover route, we've had success with Grovia bamboo pre-folds in a Blueberry cover (nice and roomy).
