Late onset jaundice?

DS did not have jaundice in the hospital. My milk came in quickly, he has been nursing extremely well, and for all intents and purposes, I have no concerns at all about his weight or his milk intake (which flushes out jaundice). But last night and today my DH and I noticed his eyes seem a touch on the yellow side. We are going to the pedi on Wednesday and will discuss it then, but I wondered if any of you had or were seeing this also?

Re: Late onset jaundice?

  • We did with Noah. We were told pretty much all preemies get it (which I know isn't your case) but he went under the bili lights when it was high. When it was at 9, they took him off.

Sorry, the point is they said it can intensify later on and that breastfed babies get it worse. The nurses told us to stick him by a window because the vitamin D from the sun will break down the extra red blood cells that the liver is not doing. Hope that is somewhat helpful!

  • DD2 has a touch of yellow to her eyes as well. We were at the pedi today for her one week checkup and the dr said that it's normal for jaundice levels to rise a bit during baby's second week, but as long as they're not seeing yellow in the trunk or on the limbs they don't get too concerned.

  • DS had rebound jaundice- at about 3 1/2 weeks old, his levels skyrocketed, and we actually had to do a 48 hour formula feed to get his liver going. (I was breast feeding, and increasing the amount of feeds was not helping). After we did this, his levels came down!!

Same thing happened to my DD. She didnt have jaundice in the hospital but at her 3 day appt I noticed her eyes were a bit yellow. They said that since it was just in her face, and since she was feeding well and having the right # of pee and poopy diapers that it would work itself out.
