Pillow in the crib?

DH and I have been considered giving our LO's a small toddler pillow in their cribs. Yes, yes, I know, nothing in the crib until 12 months. But we already don't follow that advice and have given DS and DD a blanket to sleep with. They now sleep much better. Both babies tend to ball the blanket up and sleep on top of it with their butts up in the air, and sleep the best when they put it under their head and use it for a pillow. Our 12 month ped visit is still another 5 weeks away, and I don't want to bother the doctor by calling to ask about this.

Have any of you started using pillows yet? Does anyone know what the recommendation is about when a toddler size pillow is safe?

I was thinking something like this: https://www.amazon.com/My-First-Pillow-Toddler-Matching/dp/B008HPP672/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1389025723&sr=8-6&keywords=toddler+pillow

Re: Pillow in the crib?

  • We're still a no pillow/blanket bunch. DS moves around way too much to make it even worthwhile. But soon he will be too long to sleep both horizontally and vertically in the crib, and maybe we will visit it then. FWIW, my niece is 4 weeks younger than DS, and she has an adult pillow and child's blanket in her crib. And has for a few months now. It's anecdotal support, but I think it is a matter of what you're comfortable with. If I was going to use a pillow, it would be like the one you are showing, though.

  • We use a sleep sack only and won't add anything else for awhile.

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • No pillows but he has used a blanket for months now. He loves his blanket.

  • We have a sleep sack that DS lives to climb out of. I don't even know how he is doing it! But he also needs his snuggle blanket and absolutely will not sleep without it. We also gave him a pillow a few weeks ago when he had a cold. It's one of our deco throws that's pretty hard and has a sham that buttons on tightly so there's no chance of him getting tangled in the case or anything.

My point is that my DS seems to sleep so much better with it.

  • I don't think it's such a bad thing to introduce that, but like @DublinMama said, my little guy moves around way too much for me to even entertain such a thought! I feel like he'll never sleep like a normal person, lol.

We didn't give our daughter a pillow until she was over 2. It was a regular size one.

She slept fine without it. Even now, her head always starts off on the pillow....it doesn't always end up there.

  • No pillows or blankets in DD's crib yet. I tried giving her a blanket last week during her naps and she didn't want it in her crib. It was like she thought it was something to play with because she wouldn't go to sleep until I took it out. Like the other ladies said, she moves around too much for a pillow or blanket to make sense right now.

I know I sound crazy, but my DD loves buttons and would pull it off if she could.  And eat it.  Because she tries to eat everything.  Except foods she is not sure about of course.

I was concerned about that so I put it on inside out. :D it's a major B to take off and wash but he can't reach the buttons. It had French seams so in our out there are no raw edges.
