Did anyone BF twins and NOT pump?

I am a terrible pumper.  With my first, I pumped myself into mastitis within a week.  I really don't like doing it, and my milk came in pretty quickly with both my Los so I really did not need to.  Women who EP are basically heroes in my eyes.  I would like to primarily BF my twins, but also intend to supplement with formula regularly.  If I plan on doing a combo of BF and FF, is there any reason to pump?  I don't even have a working pump anymore, so I would need to get a new one.

The only scenario I could think of needing one is if my twins are born early and need NICU time, and I need to pump to establish supply.  But for something like that, I could rent a hospital pump, right?  Is there any other reason for me to invest in a pump?

  • I will only EBF my twins. I've EBF 6 babies total for up to a year then continued until after 2. GRANTED, never w twins. But like you, I'm a horrible pumper even though I make excess milk. I hate pumping. So EBF for me. I have no choice lol

  • I had to pump while my boys were in the NICU.  Once they got home I was able to almost EBF....I do pump once a day.  They hate, hate, hate their multivitamin drop.  And we've found the best way to give it to them is to mix it was some pumped milk in a bottle.  Best of luck with BF.

  • My sister has twins and has pumped very little with them since she's a SAHM and they didn't stay in the NICU. I think she did a little in the very beginning. I lent her my breast pump. I think if my twins weren't preemies and didn't have weight gaining issues later on, I would have gotten by not pumping, unless I was at work of course. I was able to BF them and pump 1-2 times a day and this helped keep my supply up and have some back up milk stored for them. I believe that insurance companies cover breast pumps now, so you can look into that if you don't have one. If anything I would at least have a manual pump just in case and those are pretty cheap.

This is basically exactly what I'm doing. I pumped for the 9 days they were in the nicu and now that they're home I almost ebf. Once a day they get formula with a vitamin and I pump.

  • I only pumped when my twins were in the NICU. I rented a pump for 4 months, but after they came home, I used it maybe 5 times.

  • If I didn't work, I wouldn't pump nearly as much. We do BM only, so the flexibility is nice to have frozen milk in case I'm away from them for a feeding.

They were in the NICU and I did EP to bring my milk in, but beyond that I don't really "need" to pump. I do, daily, but bc I work outside the home.

  • I tried to pump in the beginning because I had one twin in the NICU, but with the other baby nursing all day and night and my two year old demanding whatever time I had left, I couldn't really make it work. My body is pretty good at milk production and I respond well to fenugreek, blessed thistle, and oatmeal, so once DS was discharged and decided he wanted to try nursing a couple weeks later, I was able to increase my supply to meet their needs for the most part. We do supplement once a day with formula and I leave formula bottles if I have to leave them.

  • I only Exclusively BF my 6 week old twins and have only pumped 2 or 3 times when I was leaving the babies with my parents for a few hours. If you are exclusively BF then I don't see the point in pumping. Unless you want to give your DH turns feeding them. But I am trying to not give my babies bottles unless I have to. I found I don't make quite enough milk to feed two babies and pump so I never do.

  • I rented a hospital pump for the first month and also got a pump but I barely used it. I'm a SAHM and so it wasn't really necessary. I didn't really use it beyond 3 months. You can read more about it here.
