WWYD re:daycare?

My DD has been at her daycare since October. So far we have been very happy with the care. Now that she is 1 she's transitioning up to the older infant room and I am not totally thrilled with one of the teachers. She seems to yell more and doesn't seem to interact on the floor much with the kids. Part of me feels like I should say something to the director but part of me feels like I'm just overreacting. I know this age needs to have more boundaries set and I certainly haven't heard her say anything inappropriate to the kids. She's just not as warm and fuzzy as I would prefer. There are always 2 teachers in the room and the other one is wonderful! I'm going to spend a few hours in the room Tuesday afternoon to get to know the teacher better. The center is an open format-meaning the classrooms are not totally closed in but have half walls so I know everyone can hear how she interacts with the kids which makes me think I am overreacting because if others were concerned it would have been addressed. Would you say something to the director about the yelling or let it go knowing your child was still being well cared for?

  • Sorry for the wall of text. I'm on my phone.

  • I guess it depends if she is actually yelling vs talking in a stern voice to indicate that a behavior is inappropriate. If I heard a teacher yelling at the kids then I would definitely talk to the director. If it's something less than yelling I would not have a problem with that.

Regarding the floor time interacting thing, from what I witnessed so far it seems like there is generally one teacher that is more active with the kids on the floor. Like there is one teacher that is playing and another that is working to control the overall chaos/get stuff ready to eat/change diapers.

  • I'm not going to worry too much about the floor time b/c I think the other teacher does interact with them. Mostly I've heard the teacher just loudly saying 'no'. Like I said, nothing inappropriate but she's definitely louder than the other teachers and has a sterner tone of voice.
  • Personally I wouldn't say anything yet.  Watch her interact with the children, and when your DD is in there stop by to see how she's doing.  We have to tell Morgan no in a very loud and stern voice otherwise she ignores us and keeps doing what we don't want her to do.  We are in no way yelling at her but it's a different tone of voice and she knows that she needs to stop whatever she is doing.  Half of the time though she continues to do it so we have to say no again, louder and walk her away from the outlet or cords she's trying to wrap around her neck!!   :)

So give it some time.  I am sure that if this teacher were acting inappropriately someone would have said something to her by now or she wouldn't be working there.

Yeah, as long as it is not yelling I wouldn't say anything. I think going in there to get to know the teachers is a good idea that will help you feel better.
