Inductions

I'm half asleep so I'm sorry if this is a crap poll. I just thought of this and became curious. I want to know if you were induced, how it happened, and if you ended up with a vaginal or c-section delivery. I've heard many people make associations between being induced and ending up with a c section. Thanks :)

Re: Inductions

  • I was induced with DS at 38 weeks due to pre-e. It wasn't fun at all and I was hoping to avoid it this time. I was able to deliver vaginally after 27 hours but I was very close to a c section. My Dr doesn't think my baby is coming on her own this time so I'm being induced tomorrow at 8pm.

  • Induced at 38 weeks +1 day due to low amniotic fluid.
After 4 rounds of pitocin and breaking my water, I had a very easy vaginal delivery.

I was induced with my first at 39w5d due to high blood pressure. Pitocin + breaking my water = pretty easy vaginal delivery. I was also induced when we lost our son at 34w5d. Two rounds of cervadil + pitocin = another vaginal delivery, but I was in labor for more than a day.

I'll be induced again later this week at 38w6d. Not sure what exactly will happen - my OB and I are talking it out tomorrow - but I think it will be cervadil and pitocin again.

  • I was induced at 41 weeks with no progression.  I got cervadil at 5 or 6 pm on a Thursday (slept through the night) and my contractions started around 8 am on Friday morning (with assistance from pitocin). I delivered right before 5 pm on Friday. My experience wasn't a bad one and I'll get induced if in the same boat again.  I just would like to know the feeling of "oh shit, it's time" vs watching the clock to leave.
  • I was induced at 27 weeks when my daughter died- they used cervadil, pitocin, broke my water- basically everything to get me to progress and it wasn't until they had pulled DH out to sign forms for an emergency c-section that she came flying out. Almost 30 hours of labor last time, I'm hoping to avoid an induction this time around.

  • I have been induced 3x.
38 weeks- pitocin and cervidal (1 dose only) and vaginal delivery.
    40w1d pitocin only- vaginally delivery
37 weeks for low amniotic fluid- miso (similar to cervidal) x2 doses and pitocin- long labor but easy vaginal delivery.
  • With DS#1, I was induced at 39 w. They broke my water first then a few hours later started pitocin. 6 more hours laboring and 3.5 hours pushing and I had my son vaginally.

With DS#2, I went into the hospital having regular contractions about 3 minutes apart and was dilated 5 cm. a few hours in triage later, my contractions and progress had stalled and my midwife decided to admit me and put me on a low dose of pitocin to see if they could get me into active labor. A few hours on pitocin, my water broke naturally and I progressed too fast from there to get an epidural so I ended up having a med-free vaginal birth.

  • Induced with my second at 39 weeks due to anticipated size. It was a really smooth induction and my body just knew what to do. Not sure if it would have gone the same way had it been my first baby. They started pitocin at about 9 a.m. and the baby was born at about 6 p.m. I progressed steadily throughout the day. I would copy that experience in a heartbeat if I could!

I've been doing a lot of research on this as well as I am being induced Tuesday because of high blood pressure. From what I've learned, success of induction leading to vaginal rather than Caesarian Section can often correlate with your Bishop Score. Definitely ask your doctor what your score is, though you can easily determine this yourself by googling it. Basically, if your not dilated, nor effaced, your cervix is high and LO hasn't dropped, the end result is likely a section. Women who go in for an induction with scores higher than a 4 have much better odds for vaginal births and if they are a 9, it rarely ends in a section. It seems to relate more with how ready your body is for birth rather than the drugs used.
I will be the disclaimer to this. DD I was not dilated and not really effaced (at least, they never gave me a number), but my cervix was soft. It's also always high. But with her, I had the easiest labor and delivery. 8 hours from pitocin to holding a baby, and only pushed twice.

  • @MrsGraham06 Oh I am so glad to hear this, I can't stress that enough! My score is a zero (no dilation, cervix hard and high, baby hiding in ribs, etc.) and am getting induced tomorrow. Thank you so much for sharing that. Every labor is different so it's impossible to say certainties with any scenario. I have my fingers crossed that mine will be like yours!

I've been inducted 3 times and have had 3 vaginal deliveries.  My cervix has always been favorable for an induction (i.e. favorable = 3+cm to start) so that has made a huge difference.  I was 3cm with #1, 6cm with #2, and 5cm with #3.  To start.  So pitocin only and fast labors.

I'm scheduled to be induced this time as well on January 24th (39w1d) and I'm already 5cm so another favorable cervix here... woo hoo!

  • I had my water broken first, followed by pitocin a few hours later.  I was at 3 cm when I got to the hospital, so I guess that made me more favorable.

I heard your softness is more important than your dilation. I was induced with pitocen with my second child Tuesday at 3:30 pm. I was already a score of a 10 on the bishop score though. 3 cm, soft 50% effaced, -2 station (high) Delivered at 9 pm that night. Contractions came on strong and hard once they pushed put oven to 6. I thought it couldn't happen that fast but I needed and epidural at 7:30 and felt like I needed to poop (push) at 8:45. 2 big pushes and out came my 9 pounder.
  • I was induced at 41 weeks with dd. They gave me pitocin and broke my water, which ended in a vaginal birth. We went in around 7am and she was here at 6:37pm with an hour of pushing.

@LabPupLuv, I am in the same boat. Doc appt tomorrow, so I definitely plan to ask about my score/favorability then!

This exactly except I was 41 weeks when I was induced. And I'm not being induced tomorrow.

  • I was induced with cervidil, then cytotec, then pitocin, a Foley bulb, and they broke my water. It was a long process, but I was able to have a vaginal delivery.

@labpupluv, my cervix was high, closed and thick when they induced me. DS was also sitting pretty high. Yes, it took a while for active labor, once we were there, it went really quick

@ScarlettDahlia Thanks for letting me know it is possible to do with a hard cervix! How long were you in labor? Edit: auto correct fail

  • @LabPupLuv good luck tomorrow!! I'm FTM so I have no wisdom or experience in this area, but wish you all the best.
  • @labpupluv, they started cervidil at 9:15pm on Sunday night. We delivered at 7:22pm on Tuesday. Tuesday morning, I was still only dilated to a 1 and still high and pretty hard.

I voted cervidil+ pitocin but I actually had cytotec rather than cervidil. I was induced at 40+2, 2cm dilated, -2 station. Ob inserted cytotec and broke my water at 7am, was at 4.5cm, 0 station at 1pm. Received epidural and started pitocin at 4, no progress made by 10pm with maximum pitocin so I had a c-section. FWIW, my ob doesn't think it had anything to do with being induced because the same thing happened to my mom so it is probably a genetic thing where my pelvis doesn't allow the baby to descend enough to allow for a vaginal delivery.

  • I think whether or not you get an epidural also plays a big role. With just the foley bulb and Pitocin, I was free to move around as much as I wanted and could change positions, walk, use the birthing ball, get in the tub, etc. so long as I stayed on the monitor. Being confined to the bed in one position that narrows the birth canal isn't ideal. I was in labor for a ridiculously long time and ended with a c/s. I really felt that even at 42w DD just wasn't ready to come out, but who knows..
