Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Is there such thing as TOO much fruits...

DD and DS LOVE eating fruit.  A serving of fruit for breakfast, lunch and dinner and also for snacks.  They LOVE it.  The main fruits we give are fresh blueberries, strawberries, rasberries and bananas and also pears and peaches, but that is like Del Monte snack cup with 100% fruit juice. Is there such thing as too much fruit???  And also any ideas of what else we can give them?

Re: Is there such thing as TOO much fruits...

  • The berries we buy are coming from Florida.  I've tried sliced apples but DD somehow gagged on it so I've been afraid to give it to them.  Pears are also a bit harder so I am nervous to give it to them.  They do love veggies too.

  • I don't know if there's such a thing as "too much" for fruit, but I do know at DS's last check up (15 month), the doctor said to make sure we're offering more veggies than fruit (because of all the sugar).  This also had to do with how much weight he put on in 3 months, though (he went from 15% to almost 90%).  We also try to stick to what's in season/freshest, but I agree that pears are definitely softer than apples, though I'd try apples again, just with smaller pieces.
  • I don't think so but I am not a doctor, DS loves fruit and he runs around all the time.  He burns whatever he eats off!

  • DS was practically a fruititarian as a 1 year old.  I don't think there's such a thing as too much, unless they are having diarrhea.

  • My son loves eating fruit as well.  He will eat blueberries and watermelon non-stop and ask for more.  He eats fruit even when there is pasta, bread, etc. in front of him.  Sometimes I question if he is even my son due to this.

  • I don't think there is an issue with "too much" fruit, unless that is all you offer for your LOs to eat.  DS loves fruit and he gets it for b'fast.  He is offered fruit at lunch and dinner, but only AFTER he is done eating the actual meal (protein/veggies/carbs).  I would definitely cut out the fruit cups.  Fresh fruits are easy to come by anyway.

DS doesn't like apples b/c of the crunchy-ness, but he loves pears.  AS long as the pear is ripe, it gets soft.  Right now in the winter months, we are mostly doing pears, pineapple, persimmon, grapes, and the occasional cantaloupe.  During Spring we do a TON of mangoes.  Summer season we do berries, kiwi, peaches, plums, watermelon.  Banana all year long.  DS hasn't been a fan of citrus fruits and I haven't tried again recently.  Anyway, just want to say there are lots of different fresh fruits out there to try out.

  • I would just avoid the fruit in fruit juice, but fresh fruit is fine. As long as they are not having diarrhea, of course!
DD eats a ton of fruit but also likes her veggies.

  • Our doctor said no such thing as too much fruit (I asked because I was also concerned!).

  • i asked my dr about this too and he was like,"too many fruits and veggies? no such thing!" and i agree with him lol. luckily all DD wants to eat is fruits and veggies. i look at it this way, i would much rather see her reach for an apple or banana when she's older, rather than pizza bagels and chips.

  • DS gets a serving with nearly every meal and every snack. That and cheese are a couple of the things  I KNOW he'll eat, so I just go with it. Since he won't hardly eat any veggies he has to get those nutrients somewhere.
