I was scheduled to be induced on Monday 12/30/13 at 8am. We had to call at 6am to find out if we could still come in. We headed in and were admitted a little before 8am. I was very nervous, I had no idea what to expect, and I sure didn’t expect it to take as long as it did. By 10am I was started on Pitocin, we had a long boring day. Nothing much happened; I was measuring 2cm almost every time they checked. By the middle of the night I started to feel pain. I asked for pain meds, and was given something called stadol (sp?); it helped me sleep for about 2 hours. My water broke around 4:50am, at that time it was clear. I was checked again and still at 2cm. The resident called my doctor who let me get an epidural at 2cm. That was around 5:30am and I ended up sleeping until about 7:30am. I asked to be checked again and was at 9 1/2cm. They were surprised by my progress. My doctor got called in. I started pushing by 10am, but not before getting sick. Not eating anything since 6am the morning before did a number on me. Sometime during pushing the baby had meconium.
By 12noon, I was exhausted and wanted to be done. I asked for help getting her out. I consented before the doctor finished explaining the risks and benefits of a forceps delivery. I was going to have 2 contractions to get her out and if not we would have to have a C-section. Everything happened so fast, there were about 8 people in the room, including the nicu team. I got her out on the second push of the first contraction. I ended up with a 3rd degree tear. Our daughter was born at 12:17pm on 12/31/13. She weighed 8lbs 5oz and was 22in long. Since she had meconium she was “stunned” as the doctor called it, when she came out and DH didn’t get to cut the cord and she didn’t get to be put on my chest.
Everything checked out and DH got to hold her. I however was a mess, shaking uncontrollably from the waist up. Eventually I pulled the blankets over my head and just tried to relax. I stayed in L&D a long time because I was feeling so sick. They eventually gave me Zofran and after a while I was able to take a shower and sit without being nauseous. We stayed for 48 hours because I was having trouble. We are home now, trying to figure everything out. Nights are the hardest. I’m scared because we are both so tired and DH is a heavy sleeper, he is hard to wake up to help. I am still having a hard time moving around. I keep telling myself that we are not the only ones going through this and other people have before. Everything will work out. I want to make sure we keep her safe.
