Adoption

Intro and Agency Question

Hello all!  I am at the very beginning stages of this process and have already learned so much from you from lurking for a couple of weeks!  I did read the very helpful FAQs.  As I am at the beginning stages, I have what may be an overly basic questions: How did you choose an agency?  As I explore different agencies, the costs vary WIDELY.  Is there a place for reviews?  And, sorry for the newbie question, what would be differences between agencies be? I have info sessions with a couple set up for this month. I live in Illinois if that helps!

As an intro, my husband and I are 33.   We do have a son who is 2. We are pursuing adoption for lots of reasons, including IF (prior to our son and since) and a true calling toward it.  I sort of always knew I would adopt.
Thanks for any help!!

Re: Intro and Agency Question

  • Different people have different ways they ultimately choose an agency, and sometimes it comes down to who you click with. For some, having an agency open to PAPs from all walks of life is important (single people, LGBT people, any or no religious background). For some, not having separate tracks and fee structures based on race is important. For others, a sliding scale based on income can tip the scales. Counseling, esp for BPs, is generally accepted around here as an important criterion.

There's a yahoo group with reviews, called AARD, for domestic agencies.

In our experience, we dropped the agency that wouldn't return our calls, and had to choose between low fees and an owner I didn't like, or high fees and a great reputation with a SW I loved. We went with Option B and I'm very glad we did

  • Thank you so much for the tips!  I will just set up meetings and info sessions and go from there.  There is already one that has set itself apart with responsiveness and helpfulness, and it too is the most expensive.  But, really, I can't imagine a more important thing to invest in.

I saw that Yahoo group but - bummer- they are closing.  Sad as it seemed like a great resource! I wonder why! https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/AARD/info
