Sharp pain in upper left abdomen

Has anyone had sharp pains in the upper left quadrant? I am having really awful pain right now. It's possible that it could be one of my many kidney stones since I have them in both sides, but to be honest, it really doesn't feel the same as kidney stone pain. That kind of pain is colicky; this pain has been persistent, even, and has been getting increasingly worse. Also, my Percocet dulls the edges of the kidney pain; however, this pain is not relieved at all by the Percocet. It is borderline intolerable. If it continues to get worse, I will have to go to the hospital because something doesn't feel quite right about it. But if I'm able to sleep, I'll just call my doctor in the morning. Just curious if anyone else had experienced something like this? That's my question, really.

FYI -- It is a constant sharp, stabbing pain. I am definitely not constipated, nor do I have trapped gas. Believe me, my bowels have been releasing themselves just fine today, lol. I have searched Google for something, but mostly it's talk of ectopic pregnancies, miscarriage and round ligament pain. It's definitely none of those -- it's way too high to be RLP. Ugh, this sucks.

Re: Sharp pain in upper left abdomen

  • Yes!! I've had this on both sides. I went to the ER on Christmas because the pain literally stopped me in my tracks. I couldn't breathe, talk, or even really move. They did tests and monitored me for six hours and had no answers. My OB also has no idea. They are hoping to figure it out after I deliver. I have Percocet, too, which barely touches the pain. Sorry I can't be more help, though....

  • Oh no that sounds awful :( hope you can sleep some. My midwife did say to call with any upper abdomen pain because of pre-e concern but I'm not sure if that's specific to the left or right side.

@carisue143, It's typically specific to the right side, but the liver does go over to the left side a bit so I suppose it's possible. Well, whatever it is, I'm going to call or go in if it doesn't stop. I'm just debating about whether or not I should wait. I guess I'll just tolerate it as long as I can! :)

I had it for a couple of days but when LO switched positions it felt a tad bit better then slowly faded away.

I hope you feel better soon @peanutmuse. You've already been through so much this pregnancy!

    Eta: change an autocorrect.
  • I wish I had something more helpful to add, but since I don't have a clue I just want to say that I hope it goes away and never comes back. I agree with Arrgcr, you really have dealt with so much this pregnancy, and I hope the last couple weeks shape up for you!

I also had this when I had my stone on the left side. I hate to be the bad news bears. I hope that isn't what it is for you and that you are getting some sleep now.

Edited because there was a run-on sentence and it was driving me nuts.

  • Hoping the pain went away or at least calmed down.  Also hoping your doc has some answers for you.  Good Luck!

  • The only upper left pain I get these days is in my stomach because that's where it's been temporarily relocated. I hope you are feeling better now and that it's not an infection like @Amylou333 mentioned. Ugh.

  • I hope u feel better @peanutmuse. My only thoughts were pre e or gall bladder maybe? (Kidney issues were a possible given) I hope u get some answers! U poor thing!! U can't catch a break!
  • Omg, seriously...? Peanut you just can't experience any additional pain in this pregnancy! It's not fair. I'm so sorry. WTF?! Btw, I've heard pre-e can be on either side, although it's primarily on the right. Let us know what your doctor says.

  • I was able to sleep for a few hours, thankfully. I think my body just kind of gave up, I had no energy to stay awake. But the pain is still there, still persistent.

For those who mentioned kidney infection, I wanted to tell you that is extremely unlikely because I have been on antibiotics for the past 40ish days to prevent infection due to the nasty one I got, which required hospitalization. It's possible that it's a kidney stone, as I mentioned in my OP, but for some reason I just don't think it is. It doesn't feel the same, and I've had more than 20 stones in my lifetime. I'm going to call my doctor this morning as soon as I get some coffee into my system. I didn't go to bed until 4am and tossed & turned, so I'm a bit groggy this morning!

    Thanks ladies. :)

  • I did not have this, but boy oh boy I hope you feel better soon.

  • hmm.... I'm no help on what this specific pain could be from. I hope your OB can shed some light on it and offer a solution. I'll be checking back to see what they say.

  • DOH. I completely forgot that you've been on antibiotics for so long. Hope you get an answer today.

  • Which antibiotic are you on? Unless you're on a powerful broad spectrum one (which you probably are with your scary pseudomonas), there is a possibility of getting infected with something not covered by your antibiotic. Just throwing that out there too. Hope it's nothing serious!

Silly suggestion as I'm sure you are probably doing this but did you try drinking a lot of water? Like I mean a ton. I was in the hospital at 26wks with bad dehydration and the pain was constant and persistent. The doctor also mentioned the possibility of renal colic which happens during pregnancy because of all the shifting of parts that goes on. I'm sure you are much more informed on this stuff with the issues you have had so I apologize if this is too obvious! Hope you feel better soon! ETA: my iPad loves to change words!
  • I think I had sympathy pains for you! I woke up at 2 am this morning with horrible stabbing pain in my upper right side. If felt like gas pain but just wasn't in a place where gas normally would be (then again, none of my organs are where they normally would be). It hurt soooooo badly. But I was finally able to fall asleep and it was gone when I woke up so I have to assume it was actually gas. Good luck...hope you got some answers and feel better!
  • Any news from your Dr on what they think the pain could be? Feeling any better?

@sambi1016 -- I drink 150-200 oz of water daily. It's not dehydration. I already have chronic renal colic since the end of October, and I have Braxton Hicks contractions daily. This is different.

@aneubecker -- I am on Macrobid. I don't have any blood in my urine and my cultures have been fine the past few appts, including one last Tuesday. I had another one today, so I'll know for sure soon, but I'm fairly certain it's not an infection.

I did end up going to the doctor today and had some labs done. So I guess I'll know more later. It certainly is possible that it's another stone making a move since I had several in my left kidney too -- I'm just skeptical because it feels quite a bit different. More like how it would feel if you had a nasty bruise and someone was pushing a finger into it constantly. Whereas my kidney pain tends to be more colicky, coming in waves and not as much of a specific location of pain.
  • @peanutmuse I hope you find some relief soon.
  • I'm just seeing this, but wanted to say I had a pain like that about two weeks before I delivered. It ended up being the baby pushing on things. Mine felt better if I put pressure on the spot. I hope you feel better soon!

@buckeyebride22 -- See, I was kind of curious about this. Except for me, it hurts worse when I press on it. That's how I feel when he's pressing against other areas (aside from the spot I'm talking about). I'll feel pain, but if I press against it, it kind of pushes him off and therefore hurts less. But the one I'm talking about in this thread hurts far more if I press on it.

The thing that worries me is if it's epigastric pain (pre-e). So I'm glad your doc is checking things. Do you know when you'll have results?

Wowzas that is a lot of water. I figured with your previous history you would have that handled! I'd be interested to know what the docs say. Feel better!
