We are flying to kauai at the end of February with our will be 22mth old. We didn't buy him a seat, regretting that now....anyone else take their baby on a long flight without a seat? How did it go and what did you do? I'm kinda freaking out now!
We flew from the east coast to the west coast with our 12 mo old without a seat. I brought our stroller and checked it at the gate and then asked if they had any empty seats. If they do they accommodate you. We got lucky and that's how we did it. But if you can't get that extra seat, I suggest getting a middle and an isle seat so you can have an easy way out to let your little one walk around. Take him walking up and down the isle when possible and don't let him nap before the flight if you can.
We've never traveled for that long without a seat for LO so I don't have much advice. Like pp, the only advice I thought of is to ask at the gate counter when you get there if the flight is full. If it isn't, sometimes they will accommodate you and give you a seat for LO.

I traveled with a 12 month old on a 22 hour flight. We made sure to bring plenty of snacks, toys, diapers, wipes, change of clothes, medication etc. on the plane so that we were prepared for any situation. It helps to bring some new toys to entertain them. If they watch cartoons, load some videos on the Ipad for them (I don't usually advocate Ipads for babies but with a long flight, all bets are off). Ask for a bassinet on the plane (if they are available). Your LO is probably too big for it but if you get a seat with the bassinet, you will be at the front of the row of seats so you will have more leg room and more space for LO to play. The bassinet is also useful for storing some of the stuff you have for LO.
If you are traveling overnight, be sure to bring pajamas and try to mimic his bedtime routine as much as possible. Good luck! You will be fine - I was dreading our flight but DS actually handled it really well.
I agree ask to see if there is an extra seat. We traveled at 13 months without a seat and I said never again. We go on a 6 hour flight as well next week and we got a seat more than anything to not annoy the person who would of been in our row she is climbs everywhere!
