Moms with little boys

Ok ladies, awkward question. Has you little guy discovered his boy parts yet? Or if you have older boys when did they? I'm asking because all of a sudden during bath time and diaper changes R grabs his stuff. I'm a little worried he may have a UTI because he was inconsolable last night and nothing seemed to work. It was a whole new cry and he looked like he was in pain. We change his diaper whenever it's wet but since he's sleeping longer stretches he could be in a wet one for hours at night. Anyone have any advice?

Yep! My little guy discovered his parts in the bathtub a long time ago. It is by far his favorite bath toy ;-). He likes to grab it and pull on it. However, he doesn't seem to notice it during diaper changes. If he doesn't seem in pain while he's touching it, I'd say it's normal developmental stuff!

  • I have a girl, but she has recently started putting her hands down there during diaper changes. I think it's just something babies do.

ah yes.  Every single diaper change he grabs himself and yanks.  You would think it would hurt him but it doesn't seem too.  He doesn't do it in the bath though.  I'm not concerned about it because, having nephews, I know that some boys just do this...

Now if he seemed to be in pain I would be worried, but otherwise I think it's normal

  • He discovered it in the bath.  Now he reaches for it during diaper time too.  If you think its because he is in pain, I would call, because you know his signs.  But it could just be that he found it.

  • My little guy hasn't discovered his yet!  He'll touch it every once in awhile during bath time, not at all during diaper changes, but I think it's unintentional

  • Is he only inconsolable and crying at night? I could be completely wrong, but if he's only like that at night, I'd chalk it up to teething or something other than a UTI but that's just me. If he's pretty inconsolable all day, then that might be a different story.

  • C is too busy trying to gnaw his own fingers off...he hasn't "found himself" yet.

  • Yeah it was just at night. He had his flu shot the day before, I'm pretty sure he's teething and he's completely happy during the day. It was just 1am and nothing I did was helping. DH keeps telling me he's a little boy and I need to get used to him playing with it.
  • Oh yes. LO loves grabbing at it as much as possible... With a smile on his face.

  • Sam has, but Ben hasn't. Sam discovered his a month ago and it has been his favorite toy ever since. The funniest part is hearing DH say things like, "It's not coming off so stop pulling on it," and, "I didn't think we'd have this problem for another 10 years."

Like others have said, I don't think it's a uti. There might be something unrelated going on that's bothering him.

Hahah yeah that was everyone's response!

I read the article a while back that talked about sexual abuse and one of the tips was to call things by their real name. If you only ever call it a penis and all the sudden he calls it a dingaling you know he was talking about it with someone else. Granted, it's probably his buddies at school but you can start asking questions.

The point was that predators don't refer to things by the proper name typically.

Another thing is that sexual predators are less likely to go for a child who uses correct terminology, because it usually is a sign that their parents talk about those things with them.

  • I read the same article. It had good information that I will use in the future.
  • Yep, he found it during diaper changes a few weeks back, so now I try to distract him so I can actually get a new diaper on.

  • My son started around this age as well. Just keep an eye out and make sure he is not inadvertently scratching himself. Open cuts and poop could breed bacteria.
