Your weight after weaning

First of all, I'm asking this because I'm in a wedding this summer and am needing to buy a bridesmaid dress. Also, I'm a FTM so I don't have past experiences to go off of...
Basically, I lost a lot of weight since giving birth (all of my pregnancy weight plus an extra 15 lbs). I'm assuming I lost so much b/c of nursing. I'm going to start weaning her soon.  So, for anyone who experienced a lot of weight loss during nursing, did the weight come back on quickly after weaning?
Sorry for the random, kinda weird question lol

Re: Your weight after weaning

  • Thanks, ladies!
I definitely don't mean this post in a "i want to stay skinny" way. I wouldn't mind gaining weight back at all. I was just curious what other people have experienced so I have a better idea of what to expect. thanks!

  • I lost 5-10lbs after weaning at one year. Prior to weaning I had lost all baby weight but nothing more.

  • I went back up about 10 pounds in a few weeks but I also started the pill. Don't know if that affected anything.

  • For me my appetite has gone down a lot since I weaned my son.  He wasn't even nursing that much at the end but I noticed a big difference in how much I was eating.  So for me I've actually lost a couple more pounds since I weaned.  I was already pregnant with #2 when I weaned my first so it's hard to say what happened that time.  Everyone is different though so it might just depend!
  • My appetite decreased drastically after weaning my LOs, so I don't think my weight changed much related to weaning.

  • I lost all my baby weight while BF and then gained a few pounds back after weaning.

  • I lost a ton of weight while nursing and kept it off (except for a little bit of hilday weight gain, but that's clearly unrelated!) I think as long as you are a careful eater, and only eat when you're hungry, your body will adjust to the change.
  • I also lost extra weight from nursing (-10 lbs) and have been able to keep it off. If I gain any weight but get on it quickly, I lose it again. I didn't gain any weight after I stopped nursing. In fact, I think I lost 2-3 lbs within the next month or so.

  • I lost a lot of weight BFing (135 prepregnancy, 115 while BF).  I gained most of the weight back after I weaned, but other things also changed in my life at the same time (started a med that can cause weight gain and elmininated some stress that was causing me to be anxious and not eat) so I'm not sure if weaning was all of it, but it was definitely some of it.  I'm so aggravated because all my BF size clothes are too small.  Ugh.

  • I didn't actually lose extra weight while nursing, but I'm finding I'm a little slimmer since weaning (but I'm also exercising more, so it's hard to see the exact correlation). Basically, everyone is different, but if you stop nursing and eat the same, you'll probably gain.

  • I could not lose a single pound when I was nursing - only once we stopped was I able to start dropping the baby weight.  Not everyone loses weight with BF, I'm hoping it might be different for me with the 2nd baby!
  • i'm not sure but i think it may depend on if you had weight to lose before getting pregnant. i was 10 pounds under my usual weight while nursing and it put me visibly underweight bc i was thin to begin with. I stopped nursing about 3 months ago and have gained 5 of it back almost instantly bc I was too thin.
  • 10 pounds fell off after weaning.  After weaning I was 20 pounds under pre pregnancy weight.  I lost 60 pounds all together while I was nursing but I also exercised.

I lost 35lbs while breastfeeding. lost an additional 5lbs after weaning.
  • Like you, I lost weight from breastfeeding, was back to my PP weight. After weaning I lost more weight and now weigh 10 lbs less than PP. It's pretty great :)
    Due date: July 22, 2012!
  • While nursing I lost about 8 lbs from pre preg weight (went from 110 pre preg to 102 while nursing). Haven't nursed in 5 months, I don't overeat but I also don't deny myself and I'm still at 102. I am small framed and super short - barely 5'3". Keep in mind that you are chasing a baby around and therefore burning more calories than if sitting at a desk.
  • Everyone is different, so I don't think that we can help you get a good idea of how weaning will affect your weight.

As a general rule, you should be consuming about 500 more calories when exclusively breastfeeding and about 300 when supplementing with food and other drinks.  So when you wean, you should adjust your caloric intake if you want to maintain your current weight.
