S/O words, what does your baby respond to?

Are any of your babies at a cause-and-effect point where they know what something means and respond accordingly?

We've been signing with C since 4 months, and that has yielded nothing. The only two things he responds to are "kitty" (he'll look at the cat) and "high five" (he'll give us a high five). Random.

Just "where's kitty?" lol She kinda starts freaking out and looking around the floor for them.

She can say the words "mama" and "dada" so I've been trying to teach her that "mama" is ME and who "dada" is, but she doesn't get it yet...she just likes the sounds :)

ETA I should add though, that it's probably the way I'm saying "where's kitty?" and not the actual words...I'm sure if someone else said it, or if I said it in a different tone she probably wouldn't have the same reaction.

  • Loading the player...
  • He knows his name and "bottle". He also knows how to work the remote. He will hit a button and then look at the tv for it to do something, if nothing happens he'll try again. He thinks it's hilarious to change the channels. He also found the SAP button and I couldn't get it back for awhile. FYI for anyone with the Direct TV remote, the button doesn't say SAP it's the green one.
  • She knows her name, but that's about it.

  • He knows the word "sleep" and unfortunately he starts to cry when he hears it. He also knows "diaper."

  • She knows her name and the word "milk" and sign. She gets very excited if I sign or say milk. She babbles "dada" and "gaga." She gets upset when she sees her sleep sack - she knows it means she has to go to sleep!

  • She responds to her name, milk and definitely knows who are dog is. If we say, "where's Lola?" she will look straight at her.

She says mama, dada, baba but they're still random sounds I think. Just like her screeches.

  • J knows his name and the dogs. He says mama dada but we aren't convinced it's more than babble.

  • He knows his name. He also knows that it's wrong/funny to pull my glasses off because he looks at me with a smile first then goes for them. He also know peek a boo - when he holds a blanket I say peek a boo and he will pull it over his face and laugh then do it again. Just babbling though, not a lot of mama or dadada
  • S knows her name and she knows her bottle by sight (not necessarily by words) and gets super excited as soon as she sees it because she knows that means she's gonna get fed. She knows her high chair too. I'm sure she knows "some" words, but doesn't necessarily respond to them or know exactly what we mean.

  • C thinks that "no" is a funny game too. He reaches for the garbage can, then turns and smiles until I say no and drag him away...then he laughs maniacally.

C knows his name and signs milk and all done. He also knows the word jump and jumps his little heart out in his jumperoo when we say jump. He also waves bye bye, which we thought was a fluke at first as he started this almost a month ago, but sure enough he still does it. He says mama and baba but just babbling and doesn't connect mama to me yet.
  • DD knows Jump, whenever we say it she starts bouncing up and down like crazy in our arms or her bouncer lol. She also knows her name and moves her hand back and forth to a "pretty hand" song we sing to her in Spanish.

@cgoode517 - when did you start signing "milk", and when did your LO start signing back?

I'd like to think that C knows the sign for milk after 4 months (he learned high five in a week!), but either he doesn't have the coordination to open and close his hand like that, or he just prefers flailing his arms and legs and squealing when he sees the bottle. :)

ETA: I'm just curious...I don't have high signing expectations at this point.

  • DD responds to the word up, she will lift her arms up for you to pick her up. She will look for the cat if you ask her where the kitty is. I'm not sure what else though.

  • I'd say E usually responds to her name and when we say "Dance baby!" She smiles and starts wiggling from side to side, it's so cute!

I think she is starting to understand waving goodbye. When someone is walking toward the door and I say "buh-bye" she often wiggles her arm up and down.

It's so fun watching them learn :)
  • J knows his name. The dog's name and Mommy. Not sure about Daddy yet. lol
