Just curious if you ladies use lansinoh (or something) every time after a feeding or just when they are sore? I actually use a nipple shield currently, so they get sore but I'm sure nothing like direct contact.
I only had to use it once. The big thing that helped me in the first week was to stop taking him off all the time. I was told it shouldn't hurt and if it did he wasn't attached right, so I was taking him off all the time and trying again. But I found that if i stuck with it, for just a minutes it would hurt but then it was ok. After about a week of that it totally stopped being uncomfortable
I use Polysporin instead of the Lanolin stuff at the rec of our LC but I apply it after EVERY feeding. It's helping immensely as we are battling a shallow latch at 6 days old.
My LC said the Lansinoh is bad but I sort of forget why. She suggested coconut oil instead, however I worry there's less research on that amt of ingestion of coconut oil on babies so yeah I mostly just use breast milk and let them air out.
@yty0205 Do you have to wipe off Polysporin before feedings?
I've tried coconut oil too a couple times, which worked, but I was a bit concerned about LO with it. Though since I'm using a shield maybe it makes no difference?
They recommend you do it after each and every feeding for the first three weeks while they are getting accustomed to feeding. So, I would say this and then as needed afterward.
I used it for the first few days because both of us needed to learn BFing. I wear the shields now and actually prefer to let the breast milk work it's wonders. I use lanolin before and after showering. 1- to protect my nips from the hard pelts of water and 2- to keep my nips smelling like me and not residual smells of shampoo or face cleanser run off. My main reason for after shower use is to get my nipple shields to stick in place. I also mix the lanolin with the dripping breast milk. I found that she cannot latch when I smell like anything but me.
