Moms of 2+...

...how are you handling your older child(rens) germiness? It seems like DD1 has been sick literally ever since we came home from the hospital. She has yet another bad cough/runny nose and a mild temp today (100.4). I feel like I am driving myself crazy trying to keep her from getting in the baby's face or touching her with hands she coughed in, etc. When we went for one of DD2's weight checks I mentioned our older child had a cold and the doc (not our pedi, another in the practice) was like "You have to keep the baby away from her and in another room!!!" Yeah, dude, like that's really realistic. Anyway...I guess this is more of a vent. I'm just really stressed and sleep deprived and this is not helping.

  • I'm so sorry. It is hard, my oldest (6) is upstairs with a fever. I've got the baby and my 4 year old in the playroom. Of course he's getting sick the night before school resumes. He's obsessed with the baby, keeping him away is going to be very hard. Lots of hand sanitizer

  • It's really hard to keep the germs away.  We got flu shots back in fall.  After that, we're just doing our best with standard precautions like washing hands, not sneezing near baby.
    Our family is complete!

  • I've given up. There's no way to keep them separated when I'm alone with them most of the day. At least DS isn't going to be in daycare while I'm on maternity leave and won't be starting preschool until April. That's a reduction in germ exposure, FWIW.

  • Yeah, DD1 starts preschool again tomorrow (well, if she's better). Plus DH is back to work so I will be on my own with the both of them and it's true there's no way to feasibly keep them apart. I am a bit of a germaphobe so I'm probably more stressed than I should be...all I'm doing is making myself nutty.

  • If DD was really sick, I would send her to my aunt's house probably. She knows to wash her hands and no kissing the baby on the face, etc. so we're good unless she gets really sick...which will happen since she gets sick every winter.

Ugh! I'm sorry OP. That's impossible to keep them separate. We've been hibernating since DD came home to avoid germs. I feel bad for DS because he's going stir crazy being cooped up in the house the past 3 weeks. I'm taking him out on Tuesday for a play date and I'm terrified he'll get sick. I'll just have to wipe him down with antibacterial wipes afterwards.

  • I haven't been super protective, but I for sure wouldn't keep my kids in another room. Make sure you wash hands a lot. Having kids that close too each other it's inevitable. I have twins that are 2.5. I would just have them wash their hands a lot and if they are sick keep them from touching/ keep their faces away from the baby.
  • I've told them to wash their hands A LOT! Back to school tomorrow. I can hardly wait.

  • I'm just going with it. I have a 5 yr old & 18 mo old and 3 week old, I just figure it's inevitable germs will happen & then you just roll with it? We wash hands like normal and don't kiss the baby (my 5 yr old had the flu last week) we all survived. No advice other then lysol, bleach and don't stress too much :)
  • We are going through the same thing! DD1 has been sick on and off since Thanksgiving. Same symptoms as you OP and we had a stomach bug run through too. We were told to keep them apart as well which just isn't possible. One helpful thing for us is the foaming antibacterial gels. I keep it on me all day and DD1 thinks it is fun to have 'bubbles' on her hands and rub it in. We do it all day long. Hopefully we get through this without too much of an issue!
