WWJ12D - Fever edition

We've been extremely lucky to have never had a sick/feverish baby - LO has been the picture of health so far.  Unfortunately, this weekend, he has been running a fever in the 100 - 102 range.  Nothing else seems off; there's no rash, no cough or runny nose, no pulling on ears, he acts normal (albeit a bit more sluggish and cuddly).  I can't tell if he's getting a tooth (we'd be up for our first canine next) or look at his throat to see if it's red.  He is, however, chewing on his finger, but has been for a while now.  I have noticed a decreased appetite today.  Urine and stools are all normal.

Right now, I'm giving Tylenol every 4 hours, and that seems to perk him up, but doesn't seem to be lowering the temp much (.5 to 1 degree).  I loathe our pedi's after-hours nurse line, so I hesitate to call them.  If he persists with a fever above 100 tomorrow morning, would you try to get him in to see the doctor?  I have an appointment myself tomorrow morning, but could go anytime after that.

Re: WWJ12D - Fever edition

  • I would call tomorrow and take him in. Honestly I never know when Dagny has an ear infection (she never pulls on her ears or acts really upset) so it could be that if his appetite is off. I wouldn't worry about calling today though since it doesn't sound super serious - just try and bring him in tomorrow.

  • Thanks for the input.  I'm leaning towards taking him in, but I don't want to do it if it's just a tooth. But, at the same time, I can't really tell if it's a tooth or something else.

It's just the first time your kid is sick kinda throws you, and you lose a little of your confidence, KWIM?

I believe three days of fever over 100.4 constitutes a call - think I read that somewhere. Eta- word choice

  • Thanks, guys.  If he's got the fever in the morning, I'll call and see if I can get him in.  I love having you guys to bounce this stuff off of!
  • I would call tomorrow morning as long as you are getting wet diapers and he's taking in fluids ok :)
I agree. A fever for a few days would worry me.  I would feel better having the pedi check him out. I hope he fells better soon.
  • My pedi said that a fever that lasts more than a day isn't usually tooth-related. My DD just had a fever of 100-101.5 for 5 days with no other symptoms. She broke out in a rash on the 5th day, so I'm thinking it was Roseola. She is also getting her 4 canines, poor peanut :( Our pedi likes to see kids with a fever that lasts more than 3 days, so we took her in, but he didn't find anything. Hope your little one is feeling better soon!
