dresser/changing table size?

I know quite a few of you don't even use a changing table/dresser, but we plan to use a dresser.

Is it really better to have a bigger/longer dresser than a smaller one? Or does it matter? I ask because I found an amazing designer vintage dresser that I absolutely love, but I want to make sure I have enough room. It would fit the changing pad but not much else. Would that be too impractical?

Re: dresser/changing table size?

  • I agree with the PP.  You just want to be able to access diapers, wipes, etc with ease, one-handed access is best.  To keep other hand on baby.

  • Ours is a perfect fit for a changing pad on top (malm 4 drawer from ikea). It's worked great. We keep the supplies on a shelf near it, but far away enough that DS cannot kick off or grab things.

  • I say if you found something you love, get it. Youll keep the furniture much longer than something that's obviously a changing table. We're not even having a changing pad/table this time. Last pg I had one that held her changing pad and that was all, and it was fine. I kept the diapers and wipes in the drawer underneath it-really not a big deal.

  • We converted a dining room hutch into a dresser amd put a change pad on top. I had a basket on there as well that I kept wipes, cream, hand sanitizer etc. That being said I stopped using the change pad and started uaing the floor before DS was even a year old. I will use it again as it was perfect for the newborn/infant stage. I personally wouldn't buy something that has no other purpose other than a change table.

  • We have a small dresser with a changing pad on top. For diaper/wipe access I bough a diaper dispenser that goes on the wall. The reviews were really good so I'm hoping it works for us :)
  • Thanks for all the input! We went back to the store and told them we want it. They are still refinishing it, but we get first dibs on it when it's done next week. We decided we can always use it as a side table by the rocking chair if we decide it's not big enough. I'm super excited! First nursery purchase!

  • You can definitely make a smaller dresser work. Just set up some shelving or use the top drawer for all your supplies. DD's dresser has room for a changing pad and lamp - that's about it. We have drawer organizers from IKEA in the top drawer to keep dipes, wipes, diaper cream, hand sanitizer, etc. It works great (although, admittedly, we end up changing her most often on the desk in the office...random, I know).

  • We have a dresser with a topper for changing but my GF just bought the pad and put it on top of the dresser. You aren't going to walk away from anyway, so just using a plan dresser shouldn't be a problem. I would put a non skid mat under the pad however.
