Going #2 after vaginal birth?

How long did it take you to become honestly regularly without issues after birth? I've been taking stool softeners, prune juice, coffee (what usually gets me going) and while I started going about three days postpartum, it's been a struggle almost every time to get something to finally happen. I have not taken the harder painkillers in about 5 days, so those are out of my system.

Just trying to get an idea when things will be more normal.

Re: Going #2 after vaginal birth?

  • I took colace until I finished the perscription. I'm 4 weeks PP and I've been regular since we came home.

  • I think I'm going to kick up the prune juice. I've been drinking baby glasses of it because I didn't want my bowels to freak with using that and the stool softener. I used prune juice in the days before I got induced just to see it's effect on me and it worked wonders when I drank a decent glass of it.
  • I had to add Miralax. Still not super "regular" but it has made things soft, and therefore, easier to pass.

  • Yeah my issue is that once I go, it's relatively soft....it's the pressure leading up to going that is a pain in the ass. Literally.
  • 5 weeks still not normal. Sucks
  • I am 1 week PP, been taking stool softeners twice a day, and am definitely not regular (I have a third degree episiotomy/tear and stitches).  First couple BMs were a little traumatic, so I am still dreading them, although they have been softer and better since then.

This for me. I think the problem is the fact that I go maybe once every 4 days so there is a lot there to cause the pressure.

  • I've gone daily since 1 day pp. But why would they give you "harder" painkillers for a vag birth? That seems odd. And would make going poop that much more difficult.
It's not at all odd to get codeine or something similar prescribed after a vaginal birth... because recovery can be quite painful.

OP, how much of an iron supplement are you taking?  My first delivery they put me on a prescription iron supplement which I took in addition to my prenatal (which I take while breastfeeding,) and I think it was overkill on the iron, which can give you harder stools.  This time I just took my prenatal, and I take a fiber supplement as needed, and don't have any poop issues.
  • They gave me Norco. Which I don't believe is along the lines of Vicodin of "harder" ones like that, but it does more than ibuprofen which was the only other thing I was taking besides Colace. And Norco blocks you up.
  • No iron supplement. Just taking my prenatal still and calcium/vitamin D
  • 4 weeks pp and I finally am back to normal with no pain.
