Scarlett Iris: A Birth Story (Long) (PIP)

I finally got around to writing this, so I thought I would share!

It all started on Christmas Day. We had a lovely day filled with the usual Christmas festivities with my in-laws; I ate a ton of food and had a stomach ache and didn’t feel all that well, but I chalked it up to having just stuffed my face. When we got home that night, I started getting what I thought were Braxton Hicks contractions—they didn’t hurt that much, but they just made me feel very uncomfortable.  DH and I went to bed fairly early that night because I had to work the next day; I slept for *maybe* an hour or so before I was woken by painful cramps. The cramps were low and felt exactly like the ones I get during my period. This went on all night. I got up to go to the bathroom several times—the pain from the cramps felt less severe when I walked around and when I sat on the toilet.

DH got no sleep, because I kept getting up. He told me that I should start timing the cramps and that if I was still getting cramps in the morning that he wouldn’t let me go to work. I started timing the cramps, and they were kinda sporadic: 14 mins, 16 mins, 10 mins, 18 mins, and 21 mins. I thought the timing was too spaced out for me to actually be experiencing true contractions, so I stopped timing them. I tried to go to sleep, because I really didn’t want to miss work.

Around 4 a.m., I noticed the “cramps” were getting closer together and I knew I would not be getting any sleep. The cramps got so bad that I had to run (aka waddle…as quickly as I could) to the bathroom to throw up.  When I threw up, I felt a gush of something fill my underwear…it was blood. I was really freaked out, so I called out to DH and told him we had to go to the hospital because I was bleeding.

He jumped out of bed and we got a few things together and went to the hospital.

When we arrived (around 4:45 a.m.), I was wheeled to L&D. After three nurses examined me, it was made known that I was already 7 cm dilated! Yes, I was in fact laboring all night and had no idea.

My OB (remember the d-bag who said that I wouldn’t be able to handle giving birth without an epidural?) was called in, and he broke my water.  Before he left the room, so that I could continue laboring, he let me know that I wouldn’t be able to get an epidural because there wouldn’t be enough time. I should have told him that I didn’t care because I didn’t want one anyway, but instead I smiled and looked at DH and said, “Oh well”.  By this point, the contractions were coming every two to three minutes and were getting pretty severe.  DH stood by me and at one point the contractions got so bad that I threw up. DH cleaned the vomit from my face. He was absolutely fantastic through the whole thing.

The nurses told me that if I felt the urge to push that I needed to wait and to not push. I didn’t feel that urge for several minutes, but when it finally came I was ready. The nurses ran to call the doctor, and it was finally baby time.

The nurses were awesome, and I don’t know if I could have pushed Scarlett out without their encouragement. I was getting so tired and the pushing didn’t hurt so much, but the burning sensation was really uncomfortable. I started panicking in my mind that I wouldn’t be able to do this, but one nurse told me to push a little longer the next time. I at least could do that. I probably pushed about 12-15 times before Scarlett was born. It was the most surreal moment. I didn’t even realize that she was out until I saw a blur of dark hair and a little body! I looked over at DH and he had tears of joy streaming down his face. It was truly a beautiful moment.

Scarlett Iris was born the day after Christmas at 6:51 a.m.; she weighed 5lb3oz and was 17” long with a ton of dark brown hair. I love her so much!

LOL. No, that's not weird at all! When DH called my sisters to let them know that I had just given birth, my sister said "She would give birth in like two seconds, when other women are in labor for two days!" I was really scared when the nurse told me I was already 7 cm dilated, because I felt so mentally unprepared to give birth. But being unprepared is probably what helped get me through the experience.

I'm sure you will be just fine! Just focus on getting the baby out. That's what I did when it got really tough.
