Infertility

FET plan (kinda freaked out)

So we have 6 embryos frozen on day 3. Two 8 cells, One 7 cell, two five cells, one 4 cell. We also have one blastocyst frozen on day 6, but my RE thinks its "weird" and isn't a huge fan of transferring it, mostly because he does not think it will survive the thaw- there's an issue with its zona. Anyway.

My RE wants to unfreeze ALL of the day 3 embryos, see which make it to blast, and then just transfer those. he thinks we will probably get one blast, maybe 2 (fingers majorly crossed). I had it in my mind that we would do a couple frozen transfers- maybe the 8s first, then the 7 with the 5's, for example, but now all of my eggs, so to speak, are in one basket. I don't want to drag this out.. and we are OOP, so his plan makes sense but still. What if none make it to blast? UGHHH. Or on the other end, what if 3 make it? or, unlikely, 4? He said if we get 3 or 4 we could refreeze them, but wouldn't that hurt the quality somehow?

I wish they had just let them grow before freezing them! Now all of a sudden I feel much more pressure and stress with this transfer, knowing it is probably our only chance, even though nothing has *really* changed. I feel like I'm back to that awful feeling between ER and ET. My lining check is on the 14th and then they'll thaw them a couple days after that. I'm sure I'll be a mess then. Anyway, just wanted to vent all of that out... Thanks for listening and reading all of this!

That would freak me out as well, but it's a good thing your RE is bringing it up to u before hand. My first RE decided to thaw all 13 of our day 3 embryos without telling us!!!!, as u said "to pick out the best 2" it was a traumatic experience for us. And only after we insisted they try to refreeze even a few of them, only 2 made it thru the refreeze. I was OOP at the time too, and dh and I were thinking that we'd have at least 2 or 3 chances with fets before having to pay for another ivf. But didnt work out that way. Best of luck with ur decision ♥

Why did they freeze on day 3? Seems to me if there was a reason to freeze on Day 3 then there's a reason to transfer on day 3. I don't think I would want them to grow anymore in the dish at this point. I think your ute is probably the best place for them. You should be comfortable with the plan 100% before you move forward. They are your embryos, remember that!! Eta: spelling and to add that you get a choice in your treatment, advocate for yourself if you only want to thaw 2 at a time!!
I have no idea why they froze them on day 3. Maybe because they knew we weren't doing a transfer due to my high E2? I agree with my RE's plan, but I don't think I'll ever be "comfortable" with anything related to IF! :) Money is also an issue, as usual. Each FET is about $4k at my clinic, and a fresh cycle is about $15K-ish for me. So if we were to do two, or three FETs, we could have done a fresh cycle again.. I don't want to drag out FETs over a long period of time if we're going to have to do IVF 3.

Hi hun! Sounds like you have some big decisions to think about!
I will say that my clinic freezes on day 3 most of the time. When they do FETs with 3 day old embies they thaw the embies and then transfer the next day. They don't necessarily wait until they get to blast.
Also, is there an option to thaw some of the day 3's one by one until they get 2 that look good? It only takes about an hour to thaw so they could start with the 4 cells and work their way up maybe? At least that way they are all not out on the line so to speak.
Maybe bring this up as an option if you think it's a good option? I know some REs prefer 3dt and some want to do 5dts, but it might be worth asking. Good luck to you!!!

  • Wow, that would definitely be a tough choice. I think your RE probably has a game plan in mind that would help you the most in the long run, but I could see why it would freak you out. I'm OOP too, and doing a FET. I really see what you mean about money with several FETs equaling out to be the same as a fresh cycle. SO many difficult decisions. Know whichever decision you make is the right one. We can only do so much!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you, and let us know what you decide.
