Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I am terrible at...

I am terrible at putting my baby down to sleep. She usually falls asleep while nursing. So, in the process of standing up and walking to the crib or just when she hits the mattress she wakes up. What am I doing wrong? Any tips to get her to stay asleep? She's almost six weeks.

  • I think that's pretty normal. For me, I like to nurse side-lying in bed. I put LO on a small blanket so when I transfer her to her crib it's not a shock to lay on a cold surface. We also pat her bottom to try to soothe her with movement. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

  • Let her fall asleep on her own, in her crib.

This has been talked about a lot lately. :)

This is my advice, I posted it in a similar question earlier this week.

Waking up after being laid down, even if you think they are in a deep sleep, is very very common. Instead, put her down awake to fall asleep on her own.

    Swaddle, unless she's rolling.

Keep an eye on her awake time, so she doesn't get overtired. This is a guideline we use:

    0-4 weeks: 30-45 minutes
    4-6 weeks: 40-60 minutes
    6-8 weeks: 40-70 minutes
    8-12 weeks: 50-80 minutes
    3-4 months: 60-90 minutes
    4-5 months: 1 hr to 1.5 hrs
    5-6 months: 1.5 hours
6-9 months: 2 hours, give or take 15 minutes

Not sure how old your LO is, but guessing a month or so? I'd recommend starting at an awake time of 40 minutes, and then putting her down then, awake while swaddled (see Escape Proof Swaddle technique below).

  • Putting her to bed awake is okay; it gives her a chance to practice soothing herself to sleep.  She's old enough for that, and it's okay for her to mutter to herself for a bit while doing it.

(Obviously, if she's full-on crying, you'd want to soothe her, but low-level fusses and grumbles are part of the falling-asleep process.)

  • We always put DD2 (almost 5 weeks) down awake. She spends between 5-15 minutes cooing and grunting, but she always fall asleep by herself.

Very rarely does she get herself riled up enough to cry.
  • I'm convinced she's getting paid to advertise this schedule and video.
    I wish.

My LO screams bloody murder if I try to put her down awake. The only way she falls asleep is nursing or me bouncing and/or doing squats (my thighs are looking pretty damn good at this point) while i hold her. Bouncing makes it easier to put her down because I can bounce/walk her to the crib once she's asleep and she doesn't notice. Sometimes she'll wake back up once she's down but I just bounce her for 2 minutes and she's dead to the world after that. Learned this from my mom, she did it with me.
