Stupidest Thing You've Heard Today...

Today, while being snowed in, I'm all over facebook, TB, and pinterest while DH plays video games. I ran across a friend of a friend who has decided that because she has three college degrees, she's not required to breastfeed. Oh, and that breastfeeding is gross, and get this, BARBARIC.

Breastfeeding isn't for everyone, and I totally get that. Some people think it's gross, which I don't get quite as much, but to each their own. But it's barbaric? I just. I can't. You have three college degrees, and something as uneducated as "Breastfeeding is BARBARIC." comes out of your fingers? STFU.

What??

  • I cant believe stuff like that comes out of peoples mouths. Ugh.
  • Barbaric? Invite her over here, please. I am really intrigued by what her explanation to describing it that way would be. (I am not a BF momma this time around either). Wackkkoooos everywhere, I swear!

  • And because she's "smart" or "educated" her child will automatically be as well? All children aren't the same. Ask my parents, I was very book smart, my sister was pretty average, and our brother... Massively lacking the intelligence gene. We all came from the same parents and there was no difference in the way we were fed or received nutrients while young. I bet my brother really wishes my mom had another degree so he'd be more smart. Damn...

This would be the current leader right now! It will be hard to top, too.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • Apparently during the course of earning her 3 degrees she never learned the proper definition of barbaric
  • Book smart with no common sense, I guess?!!!

Honestly, to each their own when choosing to breastfeed or not. I don't feel that there is a right or wrong choice. Do what's best for you.

What she just said was stupid. We all know it is what our bodies are meant to do, but if you choose to formula feed, fine! To go as far as calling it barbaric is pretty extreme and ridiculous!
  • The ability to complete higher education doesn't necessarily yield intelligence. I'm thinking fondly of a coworker (I work for the county) who has her Masters yet doesn't vote because "it doesn't affect her"

  • Someone on my facebook shared a link to my wall about a 2011 article about a infant dying from Enfamil formula. That shit has an editor's note stating it's no longer an issue (I didn't even bother finishing the article). You also don't know what my feeding plans for my child are/or if they'll have any issues with being breastfed or formula fed, myob.

My brother-in-law spent about 10 minutes educating everyone around the table at lunch today about the virtues of energy drinks. He told us that Red Bull and Five Hour Energy are all natural and better for you than coffee, and that there's nothing wrong with drinking 5-10 of them in a day. He also uses steroids, which are all natural and good for you too. I'm just glad we're beneficiaries to his life insurance policy.
Ah, the people who always equate "natural" and "healthy."  Belladonna is natural.
  • @sisterjanet Now I'm tempted get him some for his birthday...

  • Old lady today asked how I was feeling. Then answered that question for me. Later she asked the gender. I got to answer that one! When she find out we are expecting our second boy, she told me I was disappointed and started to console me. Ugh.
  • @JoelleOK my husband has 2 boys, and a former stepson who still calls him/treats him like dad.. so basically we already have 3 boys. Everyone, and i mean EVERYONE assured me I'd be having a girl. They were all wrong! I am thrilled to be having a boy. I have three brothers and growing up with them was so.much.fun! But all these people who assured me I'd have a girl are now trying to console me too. Uhhh, hello? I'm happy about this. Go console yourselves.

  • Oh Oh Oh, she later posted "I'm totally not judging anyone who does breastfeed"

    Except you totally are.

As someone who got my BA in international affairs and my MA in national security I care a lot about politics. And this kind of attitude makes me die inside every time I see it. That type of view will destroy this country faster than any politician or specific policy

My MIL and a couple other in-laws told me over the Christmas visiting that I would just have to have another kid to get that girl.  Mostly it rolls off my back, but it bugs me that they're not even waiting for this kid to be born before telling me I'll have to try again.  I can't quite explain even to myself why that part bugs me, but it really does.  (ETA I'm having a second boy too.  Forgot to start with that info.)

Someone shared that with me too, I think! Was the date on the article like 2 or 3 years ago? Crazy heads.
  • To make my encounter with the old lady more precious she has never helped during service with the nursery, I don't have her phone number. I'm trying to say we don't have a relationship which makes her comments an even bigger awkward turtle. I think the awkward turtle must be her power animal.

Silver lining: to date this is the craziest people have gotten this pregnancy. I've seen worse on here!

Yeah, it seems weirder but somehow less upsetting that it's basically a stranger assuming you're sad you're not having a girl this time.  I really like my family-in-law, but the "oh, another boy? you'll just have to try again" got under my skin.
  • A facebook friend of mine was having an elective ultrasound to find out the gender. Someone posted on her wall that she was so excited for her and then said that she was 4 1/2  weeks and was showing already. (It was her 3rd). I side-eyed the shit out of that girl and it took me all I had to not say anything.
Maybe she meant showing the pee test to anyone close enough to see it.

Because it implies that boys aren't good enough. I'm having a girl, but I was leaning toward wanting another boy. I love having a boy, and I never felt like I needed a girl. I would've been thrilled to have 2 boys. Immediately when people found out I was pregnant again, they said things like "I'll pray that you have a girl" and "I know you're hoping for a girl." And then when I found out I was having a girl, they said things like "Oh, that's great. Now you don't have to keep trying." It makes me irrationally angry and super protective of DS. I hate that people think one child or one sex isn't good enough, that you have to have one of each to feel fulfilled as a parent.

Obviously I'm still dealing with some feelings on this subject. lol

ETA: I am excited to be having a girl -- I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression and think that I'm bitching about not having a second boy -- but I'm not excited only because she's a girl. I'm excited because I'll have another baby to love, and she's going to be another amazing addition to my family.

  • Wait. How is breast feeding barbaric? Why on earth would our bodies be designed to feed our children that way if it was so barbaric. Making your baby drink hot coffee would be barbaric. BFing is the whole idea behind boobs.

I thought getting tattoos isn't safe while pregnant??? I wouldn't even get one when I was breastfeeding, because I was paranoid!
