Solids Discussion

So, I am wondering how everyone is preparing foods that are regarded as 'high allergy risk' and foods with citrus?

My husband and I have been feeding Connor eggs since 6 months, but what I didn't know is that my husband thought it was the yolk that he couldn't have and was just feeding him the whites. Luckily he wasn't allergic to them, but I am wondering if everyone here who says they make scrambled eggs means both the white and the yolk?

If you have introduced fish them, how did you prepare it? What about shellfish?

Also, I would like to introduce my addiction, oranges, to him but I am also afraid he will break out (because I do if I eat too much), he has really sensitive skin.

Re: Solids Discussion

  • We haven't done eggs yet, but he has tried little pieces of fish from my plate (baked cod) and one of his favorite foods are mandarin oranges that I cut up for him. No reactions yet, but we're lucky...neither my husband or I have food allergies.

  • He just has pieces of anything we are eating. If it's something new, I pay attention to how he's doing afterward. The only thing I won't feed him again for a while is raw onion. It was in a recipe and he was not happy about eating that!

  • I'm sure he's fine then on the egg if he has had it several times without incident. We have always done the whole egg and no problems. He has had mostly scrambled but also tried boiled, pickled, and deviled on tgiving. Eggs have also been in things I have made for instance, meatloaf.

The only foods we are still waiting on are honey, nuts, and shellfish at the advice of the pedi.

I didn't want to wait long on fish and eggs because those are such healthy foods that we have regularly. I just introduced it slowly. I have always made fish twice a week either pan seared, baked, or steamed. He has had talapia, cod, tuna, salmon, catfish, and swai. He loves it all! No problems either.

Citrus has always given me terrible indigestion but I love it so I waited with him as well. We actually tried oranges for the first time yesterday and he really liked it. I gave it to him in slices and he chewed on them but he only actually ate one. No side effects so far.

  • The only "risky" food I have given A has been salmon so far. My DH prepared it pretty plain (we had a sauce) so I just gave her a tiny bit of it and looked for a reaction.

We'll probably just give small amounts of the foods plain and then cross our fingers and stare at her for a reaction. Lol.

My niece has a peanut butter allergy and I really hope my children have no food allergies! My poor niece started school (5 yrs old) and sits at a table by herself at lunch for kids with food allergies. So sad to me but I understand the precaution.

He pooped out the whole pulp though - juice still inside!

    Lol!

  • @MKC - I follow somewhat similar thing. He has eaten whatever I am eating, just I have been holding off eating oranges until I felt safe feeding him.. now that I know others have tried it I will get a bag tomorrow!

I realized after the first few times he ate the eggs, whole eggs are alright for him.. I just wanted to make sure that is what everyone meant when they said they were cooking scrambled eggs. Has anyone tried boiled yet? (I hate boiled eggs, but hubby loves them.) I am boring when it comes to eggs, I only like scrambled or fried lol. We just got 4 dozen given to us so I am trying to find ways to cook them so he could experience different styles.

As for peanut butter, I did that awesome trick (someone, forgot who) said.. put some on their cheek and if they are allergic, more times than not they have skin rash. He didn't break out so I gave him some.

I haven't tried fish or shellfish yet, but I have a craving for crab legs. Would you give some tuna to a baby? Fresh or packaged?

  • I'm holding off on tuna since I think it has more mercury than other options. We live near many lakes so we usually eat fish from them.

Thanks for starting this thread. Answered many of my questions as well. Regarding the PB, do you think that this trick will work with babies who have sensitive skin? I know you mentioned that Connor is sensitive so I'd like to know what you think. When I tried yogurt with Noah, he broke out with a horrible contact dermatitis around his mouth and chin but digested the yogurt well. He has had it several times without digestive issues but his skin reacts the same way when the yogurt touches it. Do you think the peanut butter trick will still work? I want to try to give him PB so badly but nervous about it.

  • Ooh I like the cheeky peanut butter idea. I'll be doing that one. Thanks to whoever suggested this- great idea!

  • We make the whole egg, eggs for breakfast about half the time.

Yes, we do citrus - oranges and especially clementines - we are all addicted to them and baby loves them as well.

She eats what we eat now, so yes we do salmon, tilapia, etc.  No shellfish yet as its not in season so I don't buy.

  • @Aprilbaby49 - Connor gets a rash, like dry skin, when he gets yogurt around his mouth as well. I would think that even with sensitive skin it would work.. I mean he has some sensitive skin, if my husband even holds him with his work clothes he breaks out everywhere. When I put the peanut butter on his cheek there was not even a red spot when I wiped it off. So I would think that if there was some rash/hives, I would hold off or get it checked out. Peanut allergies are just so risky.

  • Thanks for the input @ClandestineX. My cousin's baby had an anaphylactic reaction to PB when she was just over 1 yr old so I'm so nervous about it.

  • We do BLW and haven't held back on anything except fish and shellfish. I have a severe anaphylactic allergy to seafood so we don't ever eat it anyways. Besides that, the only thing we hold off on is honey (botulism). We've done plenty of eggs, PB, and citrus (she loves grapefruit!) with no issues so far, thankfully. We just introduce a small amount and see what happens.

@ClandestineX , as for egg ideas. We do a lot of scrambled eggs but I also make egg/veggie omelets and frittatas for her.

I had a tuna sandwich the other day and gave some to A to try. He LOVED it and I'm sure would've eaten more if I allowed him. It didn't have a lot of filler and barely any mayo in it. My husband despises tuna though so it's not something I frequent.

Yeah, when I eat tuna sandwiches I don't put mayo (I hate mayo). So it is just the tuna, I also use water packed kind if I use processed.

    Thanks for the idea @kelsea1031

    Yes.

I am jealous of all you fish-feeding moms. Rhys was allergic to salmon (broke out in hives) so now I'm scared to give him anything esle. He has had scrambled egg (white and yolk) a few times with no adverse reactions. Haven't tried PB yet. I say if it's a high-risk food, feed it solo or with other foods that he has already tried so that if he has a reaction, you KNOW that it's to that food. I still don't know with 100% certainty whether he is allergic to salmon or oregano, but I'm assuming salmon because I know fish allergies aren't uncommon.

  • Oh also... I have made quiche (with lots of different veggies and cheese, you could also add ham) and given Rhys some of that... he loves it!

And I gave Rhys a free sample of orange at the grocery store. It was actually cut into wedges but still in the peel, and it worked REALLY well. I gave him a wedge and he was able to easily hold onto the peel and suck on it/eat all the orange. So that might be something to try when you give him orange.

  • With the new research they've now decided it's okay to introduce highly allergenic foods right away. We've held out on honey and peanut butter and shellfish. DD3 has had pretty much everything else as long as it wasn't a choking risk. We do BLW, so it's just easier to give her the same foods as us, and we have no history of food allergies in our families.
