I just saw this in the news and I just can't believe this happened. If the way the family described the incident is true I don't see how the doctor could be practicing medicine. This disgusts me and breaks my heart.

I'm surprised with all of the issues leading up to the wanting to use the forceps a c-section wasn't suggested by someone other than the family.

Ugh. I had seen something about this but didn't know the details. How devastating. I can't even imagine. How selfless of them to donate for other babies though. I don't know that I would even be able to think clearly enough to consider that. I hope they do sue the shit out of the doctor and he loses his license.

My heart is broken for this family. I can't even imagine. It's just so sad.

That being said, I think they should place full blame on the doctor, not the forceps. It isn't the tool itself that caused the problem, it was the way they were used. Obviously he should have done a c-section WAY before he did. Making it illegal to use forceps doesn't really make sense to me. I can see why they're reacting the way they are, I just don't think that's the answer.

Oh my goodness jennameowion!

I was told that the hopspital I delivered in no longer used forceps. They use the suction, but found forceps too dangerous.

The hospital I delivered at only has one doctor who uses forceps. He's an older doctor, and was properly trained in medical school, none of the rest will use them, some will use vacuum. That being said, they only do it with consent, otherwise it's a csection. When i read thart article it made me sick. I hope he loses his license

I refuse to read the story based on the reactions I am reading here. But when I worked in a NICU I saw some babies messed up because of vacuums too! So I would advise against any tools like that.

I was delivered with forceps and a vaccum. I was also the first baby the Dr. ever delivered. My mom said I looked so beat up.

Colt was born via forceps. They were going to do an emergency csection because the cord was around his neck and his hr wasn't recovering fast enough. As soon as they gave me the spinal block the doc checked me and said he was right there. I couldn't feel anything so pushing wasn't effective. The doc was able to grab him and with a little pull he was out.

He did have tortocollis but it resolved itself by 6ish months. We were lucky.

My son's HR dropped drastically when he was a push or two out of being delivered. I agree that there are times where the tools can probably be avoided, but I think in our case it was the only option.

I totally agree with you! I should have clarified better. The times I say not to use tools like vacuums and forceps are when csections are an option or the baby is not really close to being delivered. The times I have seen problems have been when the vacuums are used for long periods of time to get the baby out. I understand when it is a necessary thing. Sorry I wasn't clearer with my post!

No worries sweetie! I was just saying why the vac was necessary in our case. A c-section was impossible at that point

Going into labor, I was more afraid of forceps than a csection. I eventually learned that forceps are not commonly used anymore- mostly suction, which I also wanted to avoid but wasn't as afraid of it. Glad they didn't have to pull her out though. That article is heartbreaking.

Oh Good. I just can't even imagine. I cried reading that. What a horrible doctor. I hope he remembers that every day of his life.

That being said, rebound is a reminder that you CAN fire your doctor whenever you feel it's best, even while you're pushing.

On the other hand, think about it from the doctor's perspective. I know literally NOTHING about him so I may be totally wrong. But I imagine he feels awful. Losing a patient (especially a brand new baby) must be awful. Maybe he's done tons of forceps deliveries and never had a problem. Maybe there's more to the story than what the grieving family is sharing. Maybe he was just doing his job and the worst happened and now everyone with internet access hates him for a mistake he made.

Just a possibility. He may have been being negligent for sure. He might have been pushing a stressed out mother into something she didn't want to do. But really, how often do you hear about doctors NOT wanting to do c-sections? Usually they're accused of being knife-happy when it comes to that. So I wonder if he shouldn't be given the benefit of the doubt since there aren't a lot of details available.

I'm playing devil's advocate. Of course it's horrendous that this couple lost their baby and it was preventable. But hindsight is 20/20, right? Forceps are used to assist deliveries all the time without this happening. My best friend's first baby was delivered with forceps after a long labor. She's totally fine. This is one of those awful, unlikely, one in a million things. I'm pretty sure I signed paperwork saying that I understood the risks of interventions. No one thinks it's going to happen to them. It must be a scary time to be a doctor when someone can just log into Facebook and raise hell against you, because there are SO MANY things that can go wrong and not all of them are completely in your control.

I had to have forcep help with my delivery so this hits a little too close to home for me. I was offered and accepted a C-section but my DH and my Dr. decided for me (that sounds worse than it was) that LO was right there and we should try forceps. I was out of it so the decision wasn't really mine to make. I kept my eyes closed and didn't see anything but my DH watched and he said it was a little much when the Dr. was pulling. Ky came out with some battle wounds as well.

@AppleMuffins: My Dr. said he only does 5 forcep births a year... they aren't that common.
