Ames, Iowa?

Anyone know anything about Ames, Iowa? My husband has an interview with Iowa State University this month and I'm just thinking holy cow another move with a newborn. When DS was 2 weeks old we moved from Washington to Missouri.... we're gypsies.

  • I live about an hour from there!!  Ames is AMAZING!  Mostly because of Iowa State!  My husband graduated from there and so did my parents.  Huge Iowa State fans!  Great place to raise a family.  Highly recommend!

  • I live a few hours from there (also in Iowa) and I love Iowa!  It is a great state with excellent education options.  There's a huge rivalry between Iowa State University and the University of Iowa.

  • Yay! That makes me feel a little better!! It's just an interview at this point, but I like to educate myself on all the possible areas. Main importance being schools and atmosphere. At that point we'll have 2 kids and no family that lives nearby. It's hard going to new places especially when you have kiddos and no friends, lol.

With everything I've read it reminds me of the place we lived in Washington/Idaho very family friendly. Des Moines isn't so far away either. I need to look into good neighborhoods to get a feel for cost of living.

    Thanks ladies!!

We can be friends! Seriously. LOL.

If you get to the point where you are looking at neighborhoods, I am your Ames, Iowa tour guide. What department is he interviewing in? Is he faculty? Houses in Ames range from $100/sq.ft. - $125/sq.ft. and nearly all the neighborhoods are "good" depending on what specifically you're looking for.

  • This is kind of weird considering I clicked on this board instead of May 2012, but I live in Ames! DH is working his way through vet school. I like it a lot. I lived in Cedar Rapids most of my life before we moved here, and Ames is quite a bit smaller, but it's a good little town. Des Moines has a ton to do and isn't too far which is nice.

I've lived in Ankeny, Ames, and Altoona and Altoona was by far my favorite of the 3, but they were all nice! Good luck!

  • How do these super old posts keep resurfacing? I saw hogrefa and burkems and was excited to see who else has come back out of the wood work. Then I looked at the date.
