No Hypnobabies in MI!!! //Homestudy?

So after reading all the posts and getting advice from you ladies, I decided Hypnobabies was the method I wanted to use this time around.  I was devastated to find out Hypnobabies does not do classes in MI!! In fact, there is only ONE instructor in the whole state and she is in the U.P.--nowhere near me.  I have heard other ladies talking about a homestudy.  Does this mean I could essentially do it on my own at home without taking classes? Do you think I can still learn it and be successful this way? I still plan on taking some sort of natural birthing class as DH needs to know what he's in for--this is his first child, but I was really set on Hypnobabies!

Re: No Hypnobabies in MI!!! //Homestudy?

  • Hmm. I haven't gone through labor yet.... But I did read the hypnobirthing book beforehand and it was very helpful. I had an idea of what the class was about before I went to it. Obviously a class would be better, but the main concepts are 1. having mental confidence in yourself and your body and 2. relaxation and breathing. I think if you did the homestudy and both you and your husband read the book, you can still be successful! Make sure your provider is on your side, that's important too. Good luck!!

  • My understanding is, most people do it as a home-study course.  That's the way it was designed.

Hypnobirthing on the other hand is not meant to be home-study.
  • @Pinknights Hmm...getting my husband to read the book will be a challenge!!

  • I have started the home study course I started at 32 weeks I believe. I am 35 now. ITs amazing. Honestly I feel like it helps me sleep at night and if anything gives me a 30 minute relax period during the day that I've never had in my life otherwise. My DH is gone over seas for work and won't be home for another two weeks, however I feel like this course has given me confidence that I really can't handle it. Its very position and reassuring. I would look into it, its still a little early for you though since its supposed to be started later into your last trimester. I plan on selling my stuff when I am finished, so if I were you I would look around and see if someone is selling it because I know a lot of mamas do that once they are done.

  • I wouldn't  say you HAVE TO start by 27 weeks with the home study, The home study course has a 5 week program they recommend you start by the 7th month but I started late and so far it is still working for me.
    From their website:
PLEASE NOTE: Our Hypnobabies Home-Study Course for Expectant Mothers is a 5 week childbirth hypnosis course. This means that it takes 5 weeks to *learn* the deep hypnosis techniques that will enable you to have a much easier and more comfortable birthing, and then you will need time to *practice them* as well for several weeks. For the best benefit, it is actually optimum for you to have at least 2 months or more time to complete your Hypnobabies course and to practice your hypnosis cues and techniques. Please order by (at least) 7 months of pregnancy to allow for enough time to complete and practice our childbirth hypnosis course materials and techniques. We want all of our Hypno-Moms to enjoy their baby’s birth to the fullest!

  • @joules235 The hypnobabies videos I have seen on YouTube all seem to be later in labor when contractions are very close together and everyone is quiet and not really moving much, just breathing through contractions. But during early labor I know I will like to move around, maybe be on the yoga ball or just doing my normal activities until the contractions get strong. Do you start Hypnobabies immediately at the start of labor? Are you able to do it while doing other activities?

I did Hypnobirthing, so I might be totally out of my league talking about my experiences, as I know there are differences between the two.

But I used the early stages of labor when things were still pretty low-key to kind of find my rhythm and figure out what was going to work best for me and what wasn't.  I quickly learned that laying on my side was not comfortable, but sitting on our birthing ball, hands and knees on the bed sometimes, laying in the bath all were.  I'm glad I spent the time early on figuring out what would work before the surges required all my focus and concentration.

I also practiced that way though, once I had a good sense of the technique, I would walk around, sit on the ball, drink water, eat a little snack, even took a walk outside once all the while trying to remain in a calm hypnotic state.  We were having a hospital birth so I knew how distracting things could potentially be and wanted to be prepared for that.

Sorry to jump in, I know your question wasn't directed at me, nor may it be helpful to you since I did Hypnobirthing; feel free to disregard :)
  • @sschwege No problem, thanks for the input. But I thought with Hypnobirthing that you are supposed to lay down or remain still?  At least that's what I read a few places, which is why I wasn't interested in Hypnobirthing.

I'm not sure if there's an official way to approach the relaxation, visualization, and breathing.  I know in class we would either lie down or sit in our chairs.  But the instructor never told us to remain still as part of Hypnobirthing.  She actually really encouraged us to learn different labor positions, use different things such as an exercise ball, tennis balls on the back for counter pressure, etc.  But she had also been an L & D nurse for 20 years before becoming a Hypnobirthing instructor so she may have been bringing a different perspective?

In the beginning I exclusively practiced laying down because I think that's easiest, but once I sort of had it figured out I would move around.

Here's a clip I find on Youtube that I think is a fair portrayal of what a Hypnobirthing hospital birth might look like if you are interested:
