Crib-hopping at 16 months...

Well, F. We knew she had unusual upper body strength (she sure as sh*t didn't get it from her Momma!). We knew we had to put her back in sleep sacks after her first birthday when I had to catch her crawling out of the crib (sleep sacks so she couldn't get a grip on the side bars). I'll be damned if we weren't taking the tree down today, and my sweet girl--that was supposed to be in her crib asleep--walked into the living room. I guess she crawled down, opened her bedroom door, and opened the living room door. I immediately freaked out (as any first time mom is likely to do...). We have dismantled the crib and effectively locked in her in her room tonight. I am losing it over the fact she could've been hurt. Glad she was not and it was NBD, but sheesh!! Time to buy a big girl bed tomorrow. Sob!!! :( Was not ready...

Re: Crib-hopping at 16 months...

  • @missm2012 I wasn't either. I knew after her bday we were going to have to switch her early...but didn't anticipate anything before she was at least 18-24 months. For f's sake. They grow up so stinkin fast...!

  • WHAT?! Wow, lol! My kids have never crib-hopped. Even now, with s12'ers crib in the room with the kids, the 3 and 4 year old have never tried to get in her crib.

  • @juilane2004 Had a few friends over tonight that have older kiddos (2 and 3 years)...all still happily sleeping in their cribs. Damn it! I knew she was strong, but honestly never expected this, at this age.

  • NYE we were at a friends and put Lexie down to sleep on a floor mattress. She was passed out, no less than 3 tines before midnight she got up and slept walked into the living room!! She had no idea what she was doing. I'm terrified of what happens when we need a big kid bed. She is too much like her mama with the sleep walking.

  • Oh man. She is one strong determined girl! DS slept in a crib til 4, ha. I know DD will need a toddler bed sooner because she's a beast.

  • I know it is somewhat controversial, and probably depends on which crib you have, but have you tried putting the crib mattress straight onto the floor inside the crib?

Honestly, I would have waited until she was doing it consistently. I know you don't want her to get hurt. It could have been a one time deal now though. When DS1 did it, he went months between the first and second time.  I'm sure that's not how everyone does it. At he very least, I would have put her in the crib and watched her while she did it again.

UO: I can't wait until Seany starts climbing out. Then we get to get bunk beds

  • That's crazy she opened the doors too. My nephew is a master climber. He climbs onto his rocker, over into his crib and out all. The. Time. It gives me a panic attack. And he's done this probably since about 16m (he's 22m now).

Eddie sleepwalks too. He'll stand up and lay back down while asleep. In the car, he'll take a snack from his snack cup and put it in his mouth while asleep. It's freaky.

OP, I'm sorry. I'm not looking forward to the day, but I know it's not all that far for us, either. He's a monkey.

  • Yeah that day is always scary.

As for sleep walking S1 is my sleep walker/talker. Last night I had a 5 min conversation while feeding S4 and she was dead asleep. She often wanders around her room. DH does this too, I sleep closest to the bedroom door so he wakes me when he walks. I've stopped him from leaving the house once or twice.

  • I'm glad DD1 is too short to open doors... she tries, but even on her tippy toes she can't reach the handles enough to get a grip and turn.

Not sure if the shortness will help us when she starts trying to climb out of the crib though.  OP, good luck with the transition to toddler bed or mattress!  We'll likely try to transition DD1 in 4 or 5 months, to get DD2 out of the pnp and out of our room, but I'm not looking forward to it.
  • Thank you all so much for all of the good advice. After some internet searching, we decided what made us most comfortable was to take the crib apart, put it in the attic, and leave her crib mattress on the floor. I'll be damned if a spider didn't bite her on the face last night (not horrible, it was obviously a small spider). We went to multiple furnitture stores (started out at IKEA, and going into it, I was convinced a toddler bed was the way to go). Then, we spoke to a saleslady where we bought her dresser and she suggested getting a twin bed, putting it on the lowest setting, and not including the box spring for a while. As awful as it is, to think of her sleeping in the much bigger bed, her rationale made sense. So we ended up springing quite a bit (but not unheard of), for her new twin bed. I will order the rails on Amazon tonight. Was also suprised to hear the local furniture place sends out loaners until the new bed comes. Guess they realize they are competing with folks like iKEA that are cash and carry. Glad we got the one that matches her dresser perfectly. Just wanted to share the experience, as I know y'all will be there soon (and I sure as sh*t wouldn't have thought of the whole twin bed, no box thing on my own). :)

This is what I was thinking! Ha. We're still wavering on getting a second crib or moving Beb to a less expensive toddler bed. I haven't thought about a twin bed but I think when the time comes we'll do a whole set like I had growing up.

Same. James did it once and then didn't do it again for months. The next time he did it, I put him back in his crib and then went right to the video monitor to see how he was getting out. He was using the table next to his bed so I moved his crib away from everything and that bought us a few more months. I think the worst decision I made was that he was only climbing out at naps once he was doing it regularly so we switched him to a bed. We had a hell of a time with night sleeping in the bed but naps were fine in the bed. I wish we would have just done bed naps and kept the crib for nights until we were having night problems too.

But, I know plenty of people that switched to a toddler bed around this age due to other kids needing the crib or for climbing out, so it isn't too early. Good luck!

ETA: also super excited for when Leo is out of a crib because we are going to let the boys share a room. James already can't wait.

  • I know you said you already bought a twin bed, but I have a friend that got this daybed from West Elm and turned the open side towards the wall. The rails are low enough for the kid to easily climb out but high enough to keep them in. I wanted to get it for James but DH didn't like the look of it :( James went straight to a twin and we have the box and mattress on the floor without a bedframe or headboard right now.

@hmp1, how could your DH not like the look of this bed? It's amazing!
