Late Term and Child Loss

Question for those who had autopsies performed

Hi ladies-  I hope everyone had as good a holiday as possible and is as excited to look forward to the new year and say goodbye to 2013 as I am.  I had to take a bit of a social media break over the holidays, but it's good to be back :)

I have a question for those who had autopsies performed with their pregnancy losses. How long did it take to get the results back?  I'm sure every hospital is different and the holidays don't help but it's been almost 7 weeks since I delivered and we've not received results yet. I saw that an insurance claim was processed from a pathologist with the hospital in December and it was approved on the 18th, so i would think the results would have been given to my OB by now but that wasn't the case as of the 23rd.

My OB is pretty sure of what the results will show and it would be something that was a fluke so nothing to be treated, etc in a future pregnancy, but I'd like it to be official, especially since I'm hoping to be able to begin TTC on my next cycle which should start towards the end of January. If my OB doesn't hear anything by Friday, I may try to reach out to the hospital directly and see if I can get any information. Just wondering if I'm being totally unreasonable in thinking that 7-8 weeks should enough time for them to take care of this...

BFP #1- 4/2011; DD Brynn born 12/2011

Re: Question for those who had autopsies performed

  • No real answer but I was told 6-8 weeks for ours. I was so drugged up though I have no idea where they're being sent. Hope yours come in soon and hope it gives you some answers!

  • Thanks ladies. I'm going to call my OB again tomorrow and see if anything came in last week. She's the one who told me that the results would likely come to her instead of me directly. I just can't imagine the pathologist would have submitted a claim to the insurance company in early December if everything wasn't complete and they were ready to report.

    ***SIGGY***

We did not have an autopsy done but were told that if we did opt to have one, it would take 6-8 weeks to get back - and my OB would get the results directly. Maybe there was some sort of back log because of the holidays...? I would definitely call your OB to see what's up. I hope you get the results really soon.

    *siggy warning*

Ours took a few months for all of the results.  There were some hurdles getting her body transferred from our hospital in Virginia to Children's in DC due to state mukkity-muck.  We had preliminary results when they released her body back to us in 2-ish weeks, but we didn't have the final results of all of the screens for several more after that.  I think it depends on how much testing they have to do.  It seems (from what I've seen) to take the longest in cases where they never find the cause, like ours.

I hope you get some answers, and soon.

  • Our autopsy report didn't take that long to get back to us. The report on the placenta took a lot longer. I'm not really sure why that was the case. My doctor had to call and ask about the placenta report. I think the autopsy only took a couple weeks (honestly, the days were all flowing together at that time so I'm not 100% on the timing). We were also at a women and children's hospital so I don't know if they work faster since they do those types of cases all the time.

  • Thanks ladies. I called the hospital and they said they couldn't help me and I had to call my OB directly since she would get the results (I was just hoping someone there could tell me if they had been sent already or knew when they would be).  When I called my OB's office, they said that the hospital called them on the 20th and requested the Panorama test results that we'd done earlier in the pregnancy to help them complete their results.  Supposedly that means we should have the final info anytime now.  Fingers crossed we'll have it back sometime next week.

  • Our autopsy report came back after about a week. The doctor who delivered for us called me directly to go over it and then our ob went over it again at our follow up appointment. Unfortunately we didn't get any real answers, just confirmed the visible problems that we already knew about... cord accident, partial placental abruption, low weight. None of these things were a problem in our subsequent pregnancy and our dr thinks it was just a terrible fluke.

  • We had an autopsy and got results within 4-5 weeks (maybe earlier).  DD was still in the NICU and I guess I asked one of the nurses about it.  It was available when I first asked about it so the results may have been in even earlier.  The attending physician sat down and went over it in detail with us.
