self pay, health insurance, questions...

Currently we have no  health insurance, and we are paying for everything out of pocket. However, after the baby comes we want the baby covered. Does anyone know if you can buy private health insurance for just a baby or if it has to be for baby and mom? We had bcbs for about 6 months, before I ever got pregnant and it was $400 a month. Due to job changes we can't afford that much, and I'm scared to death to have an infant with no health insurance. It is bad enough going through the pregnant without it. Thanks!

  • I don't know where you live so your state could be different from mine, but we have something called Healthy NY that makes sure that children are insured.  Look into your state policies and see what they offer.  I bet you can find something to fit your needs.  Good Luck!

  • Here in Michigan we have Healthy Kids.. a state program that makes sure no child goes uninsured. I hope your state has something like that as well. Good luck!

  • California has a similar program.  Check your state's website!
  • I'm not sure about the answer, but if you go on most companies' websites you can get a quote for coverage. I've investigated coverage for DH, baby and I, and found BCBS in NY for about $250 a month, so $400 really seems high. You can always get insurance for yourself with no maternity coverage if you want to cut down the cost.
  • Ha. $400 a month was for just dh and I. It would have been an extra $150 a month with maternity coverage. I'm not sure why it is so expensive, could be because we are still young (20 &21). Thanks for all of the tips though.
  • California has the AIM Program for pregos up to 30 weeks prego...they pay 1.5% of there annual income which is no more than a grand and they split it up so you don't pay that much. Your covered up to 60 days after you give birth, w/in the same state dept. you can get Healthy Families Program you pay an average of 4-20 per month depending on your income...if you make less you can get medical and if you make over that amount you can always look into the county and they have programs too.

Good luck...start by asking your clinic what is out there in your state and county.

  • I'm pretty sure you can get health insurance just for your child.  I'm self-employed, and when I was looking at quotes online for health insurance (long before we were even thinking about kids) I noticed that it had instructions for how to fill out the online form for your kid only.  Go to something like ehealthinsurance.com and check it out.
