Honey ham.. Would you be concerned?

I am going to sound like THAT mom for a second. I without thinking, gave my son a slice of honey ham from the deli for a snack today with some smoked turkey and a little cheddar, and apple slices (he's a vacuum). Anyways it occurred to me after he had finished his lunch that, "DUH babies shouldn't have honey!!". The rational part of me figures that it was cooked, there is a tiny amount of pasturized honey product in the meat, he is 2 weeks away from being a year. He should be perfectly fine. But the nervous mom is me is panicking a little. I tried to call the pedi for what to look out for JUST in case, but apparently they are completely closed on weekends, don't even have an on call staff, or after hours nurse line. Sigh. So i'm a little extra worried. Would you be concerned? Sorry this sounds so over dramatic, i just don't want to make him sick because of a stupid lapse in judgement on my part.

Re: Honey ham.. Would you be concerned?

  • IMO I think you are fine. Since the honey is baked into the ham, the heat would kill anything that could harm him. I think the concern is more for raw honey. Also being 2 weeks away from 1 year, I would not worry.

  • I wouldn't be worried. I glazed my holiday ham with honey and gave some to DS. He LOVES ham. Our babies are very close to 1 year old and the honey on the ham has been baked with the ham at a very high temp so I think the risk is way down, if not 0.
  • I'm sure it okay like PP said. But I worried about this last month, another mom fed DD honey graham crackers at a play date. I was pretty mad that she decided to feed that to her without saying anything to me. But she was fine

  • Thanks ladies, i am sure i am just being silly, and that he would be fine just like you all say. Of COURSE he would get constipated tonight though (one of the symptoms of botulism). But he is prone to that anyways and is otherwise fine. I am sure it would be too soon for him to be symptomatic anyways.

  • My friend gave her son yogurt with honey [just a tiny bit] when he was like 7 months old because she couldn't "remember why she shouldn't give it to him." She freaked out, he was fine but we learned kids are actually more likely to get botulism from dirt.
