Babies with birthmarks

Just curious how many of your little ones have birthmarks or are developing them? My little girl had 5 strawberry marks from one month on (now only 4 remain) and one what looks like a very large cafe au latte spot that wraps from her back to belly. Was wondering if I should see someone about these, my doc doesn't seem concerned ever but I get very anxious about them (especially the cafe au latte).

Re: Babies with birthmarks

  • DD2 has a small red spot on her upper back.  The doc said it would start to disappear after her first birthday.

Strawberry marks run in DH's family.  Most of his cousin's kids have them.  Three of my nieces have had them and they have all disappeared.

  • We have a couple strawberry marks as well. The doctor said they are no cause for concern and will disappear over time.

My 11yr old developed what started out looking like the beginning of strawberry marks on her left leg around 2 months old, but they never swelled, they just stayed flat and light coloured - she still has them. They are little splotches, and they kept "developing" over the first few years of her life. They're very pale pink/brown, and they don't bother her. James, my youngest, developed a true strawberry (hemangioma) birthmark at about 2 weeks old - it started with the flat pale pink spot, and gradually swelled into the puffy textured "strawberry". It stopped swelling at about 8mo, and now it's already starting to get little mild skin-toned flecks in it. The swelling hasn't gone down yet, but that process can take 5 to10 years to complete.

The cafe au lait spots are different, though. A strawberry mark/hemangioma is a vascular birthmark. A CAL birthmark is related to pigmentation/melanin. CALs are harmless, but they can be more common in people who do happen to have certain illnesses (usually when this is the case, there will be several of the CAL spots, not just one... because strawberry marks, stork bites, and mongolian spots are all completely unrelated, they wouldn't be included in the count). If your LO doesn't have any concerning health issues, I wouldn't worry about it :)

  • DD has both an "angel kiss" and a "stork bite". I don't know if there are more formal names for them....the one on her face is lighter than it used to be but the one on the back of her head isn't ....It doesn't really bother me though since she'll have hair.

  • DD has two birth marks. They are both very light pink and easy to miss if you don't know they're there. One is in the middle of her lower forehead. The other is at the nape of her neck. I'm not real concerned about them. They've looked about the same since birth.

  • DS has a huge strawberry mark on the back of his head that's covered by hair. I'm not worried about it.

  • LO has three. They are all very light in colour. Two are very small - ankle and back. A bigger one over her knee.

  • Maybe more info than you need, but DH has a cafe a lait that goes from his left back down over his hip and on his thigh. Has had it most of his life with no issues.
The only difference is that his leg hair grows a little differently on it.
But if you are worried I would ask at your next appointment

  • DS has a small brown birthmark on his butt and a little dot on his chest that the Dr said was a not fully developed third nipple. :)

  • All of my kids have a birthmark or two on their head.  You can't tell at all since their hair covers it.
