Has anyone delivered at Miami Valley or Kettering Medical?

Hey Everyone,
I live in the Dayton area and we are looking into the two hospitals above. We plan on visiting them and taking classes and all that but I was wondering if anyone had ever delivered there that could offer what their experience was?

Thanks in advance!

  • I delivered my first two at mvh and it was wonderful! Great team and great experience!! We live in Cincy now so I won't deliver there w this one...:(

  • I actually have delivered at both. With my 4 yo, I saw an OB who had her office and delivered at Kettering. It was a nice hospital, most staff were friendly. It was pretty busy when I was there but DD was born during a baby boom (9 mo after the big ice storm that happened in 2008). It's easy for visitors to get in and out of. I didn't have the best experience with my OB though and was hoping for a VBAC, so I switched to a practice that delivered at Miami Valley. MVH does have a couple things that Kettering does not. They have Family Beginnings, which is a natural birth center. I was not able to use it since I was a VBAC hopeful, but I've heard really good things about it. MVH also has a level III NICU and are the only hospital in Dayton with a L&D to have one. My DH and I agreed that while most of the staff at Kettering were fine, we thought overall the staff at MVH were friendlier. It was just a really pleasant environment. MVH is downtown though and it's a PITA to get in and out of. We thought the hospital rooms at both were comparable.

So overall, Kettering was fine, but we preferred Miami Valley. We won't be having any more kids, but if we did, we would go back to MVH. You could also look at Miami Valley South, since it's new and supposed to be really nice. Does your OB deliver at both hospitals or are you looking to decide on a hospital and then pick a doctor that delivers there?

    STUCK IN THE GRAY

My OB delivers at Kettering, Miami Valley, Good Sam and something called Elizabeth Place. We are deciding between Kettering and Miami Valley. Our doctor said that Good Sam was good at one point but they now don't have the support they need there so if possible I should go with Kettering or Miami Valley. Kettering now has a level 3 Neo Natal NICU which opened in 2012 too so we're kind of torn. We will be visiting them both as I get farther along. I liked that Miami Valley had the ability to labor or birth in water (though I don't know if that's something I would choose) but from what the doctor said the post par-dam care at Kettering was "phenomenal". Blech, just so much to think about :)

  • I am due in about 4 weeks and am delivering at Kettering.  We looked at both Kettering and Southview.  Kettering has redone their maternity in the past year or two and it is very nice.  The nicu is a level 3b, which is almost the highest you can get.  I don't think we will be using it, but each baby actually has their own nicu room, it isn't a large nursery for all babies.  This allows for peace and quiet for the baby as well as the mother/father to stay in the room  with them.

As far as water birth, I know Southview can do them also, I'm not sure about Kettering.  We chose Kettering over Southview due to the updates and the fact you have to be buzzed in to actually get on the floor in maternity.

Thanks that's helpful. I like that security too!

  • It sounds like Kettering has made some changes since I delivered there in 2009. I know they were doing a lot of construction at the time. not sure about the phenomenal post partum care at Kettering your doctor referenced, but again, things may have changed since 2009. I think both are great hospitals and in terms of care, you'll be in great hands at either one. If I were you, I would just schedule tours of each one and see which one feels right to you.

  • I have friends that delivered at MVH and had good things to say. I delivered at Kettering this past September. Location is nice. Staff was friendly and very attentive. The mother/baby unit has been updated in the last few years and is beautiful. The delivery unit is outdated but I wasn't focused on that while delivering :) They do have a NICU with private rooms. Plus my OB is in the Kettering network so it was between southview, Kettering and Soin. Good luck. I don't think you can go wrong with either!
  • I delivered at MVH and loved it.

  • This is an older post, but I wanted to add that I delivered my son at Kettering 2 months ago and have nothing but great things to say.  All the nurses were wonderful.  We had an amazing nurse in LD. My son had jaundice and had to be readmitted to the NICU there.  The doctors and nurses were wonderful.

  • @ahare2009, Thanks! We're taking our childbirth class there this weekend and I'm really excited to see the hospital on the tour.
