Siatic Nerve Pain?

Does anyone have any advice for relieving this crazy pain I've got shooting down through my butt cheek?! It was just random, but today it's been constant for about 6 hours and now has moved down into my leg. Really putting a damper on things! I'm only 15 weeks along too… so I'm assuming it only gets worse from here?!
Please help!

Re: Siatic Nerve Pain?

  • My doctor said to sit on pillows wedged under your butt. Not like a donut, but like wedge a pillow under each cheek from the side. This creates the same effect as a donut, but causes less pressure.

Also, laying down helps. Otherwise, it's not something that can be easily relieved :(

@HeyAmberNicole I'll have to try the pillow thing.. Laying down really doesn't work for me.. Laying down and walking both hurt! It's crazy.
  • I've had sciatic pain with all three pregnancies starting at 8 weeks. Mine actually never got worse as I was further along but I found what helped was walking. Sitting made it hurt way worse. Another thing that helps is laying on your back, put a tennis ball on your butt cheek and roll around. The week after I had my first two children the sciatic pain was gone so at least it's only temporary.

  • I had issues with it prior to pregnancy. I was seeing a chiropractor. I spoke with both of my OBs about returning to treatment because mine has started to hurt extremely bad. (I am15 wks also) They gave me the OK to go as long as the office had worked with pregnant women. May ask your OB about that.

  • Thanks ladies. I'll definitely ask at my 17 week checkup. And I'll have to try that tennis ball. Right now the only thing working is the husband rubbing me, but he can only do that for so long!
  • I have the same problem with my first 2 pregnancies. The only thing that really relieved me was my belly band it is a lifesaver for me.

  • My aunts a physical therapists she had me stretch my hamstring all the way up to my hips you can google the stretches online yoga helps alot the strecthing of the muscles help aleviate the tension of the nerve...its been helping me i strecth every moring and night also a heating pad feels great. I had unbearable pain that i couldnt even walk aftr a massage to ease tension in that area and i learned to strecth correctly its been great ever since good luck!
  • The joys of sciatic nerve pain! Sitting and walking made it worse for me. The best thing was to take the pressure off that side, and either lay down with it propped up or to sit on pillows like someone suggested. I also tried heating pads, ice packs and having hubby do a deep massage but unfortunately it doesn't really work. I will also second seeing a chiropractor if it lasts more than a day or so. Feel better!

  • @Sprinkles86 I'll have to check these stretches out. I've done the hamstring stretch just because it seemed logical. Hurt pretty good! Today my new concern is the gym! I did 30 mins of cardio before my weightlifting. Nothing serious.. Just walking at an incline… DID NOT FEEL GOOD! I'm hoping my cardio doesn't inflame it and instead help work it out!

  • I went to the chiropractor today for an adjustment to help...seems to be doing the trick!

  • I see my chiropractor regularly and just had 2 visits last week due to right side sciatic pain. Definitely being adjusted and stretched out made a huge difference. Also I made sure to take it easy those few days it was hurting.
  • Sciatic pain is the worst!! I actually got a pregnancy belt and it helped a ton...mine started at like 6 weeks and now that I am further into the second trimester mine just completely went away. It got better with the belt and now its gone (knock on wood)... Not sure if it went away just on its own or if the belt encouraged the pressure release. Hope this helps and you find some relief soon!!!!
  • I'm having the sciatic pain too (also 15 weeks) and the pillows have helped a bit. I will be trying those stretches too!
