Hands fall asleep at night?

For the last few weeks, I am found myself tossing from one side to the other in the middle of the night because my hand falls asleep and it wakes me up. Does anyone know what causes this and if I can do anything about it? I didn't have this in my first pregnancy.

Re: Hands fall asleep at night?

  • I have this. This is my first pregnancy but I've heard its due to pregnancy induced carpal tunnel. Not much I've found to help except to turn over.

  • It happened to me at the end of my pregnancy with DD, my arms and hands would fall asleep. This time around it's already starting. Not sure the reason behind it :-/

  • Does it go away when you wake up and shake your hands? Do some fingers go numb, but not your pinky finger? If yes, it's most likely carpal tunnel syndrome which is more common in pregnancy.

If it's really bothering you, try to limit activities such as typing or repetitive wrist rotations. You can buy wrist splints to wear at night to keep your wrist extended which can help.

  • This happens to me every night. It's sooo annoying. I never had this when I was pregnant with DS.
  • My hands, arms and feet do this. I wake up with a dead arm and it hurts so bad! I haven't really looked into what could be the cause, it's just one of the many weird things that comes with pregnancy.

Omg yes I've experienced this starting earlier this week. It's so weird. Sometimes if I'm awake and I'm in the same position for too long it will happen too. It happened with my feet when I was stooping to clean the floor. If I wiggle them a bit it seems to go away after a few minutes.
  • This happens to my legs. It's so annoying because I have to sleep on my sides since I can no longer sleep on my stomach
  • Yes! My hands always fall asleep. I hate the pins and needles feeling! Usually always wakes me up :-/

  • Yes! I had it so bad with my first pregnancy, so painful. Thankfully, it hasn't really gotten too bad this time. (Where is some wood to knock on??)
  • Last time it was because my giant pregnant lady boobs were cutting off my circulation to the arm on the bottom. Try moving your arm out from under your boob.

  • Thanks ladies! Glad to hear I am not alone! I guess we all just suffer through.

  • Yep. Carpal tunnel. I've been experiencing it for a few weeks and it's extremely irritating... I'm a receptionist so I can't get away from typing... Just "one of those things."

  • It's carpal tunnel. Mine gets BAD in pregnancy. My arms will go numb to my shoulders sometimes. You can buy a wrist brace but I haven't found it helpful that much except when I'm trying to paint a nursery.
  • Yeah I have it. Carpal Tunnel. I had it before a little but changing jobs helped it. Now it is back due to pregnancy.

There are braces out there that you can get at the pharmacy that you can use to sleep in. There are a few different kinds.

  • Yes! This has been happening to me. So annoying, esp when I can't get back to sleep on a work night.

  • Me! Bc I'm sleeping on my side for the first time ever, my arms and hands have no natural place so I end up sleeping on them. Then they fall asleep
  • This has happened to me several times in the past week or two. Very interesting to hear there is "pregnancy induced carpal tunnel." I believe I have had carpal tunnel syndrome for years, but I've never actually gotten it checked out. I also occasionally get a weird numbing sensation in my thumb or fingers if I try to pick something up and it presses on the nerve wrong, and if I recall correctly that didn't start until after I got pregnant, though I never connected it to the pregnancy because the two seemed completely unrelated apart from timing. It only lasts for 10 seconds or so before the feeling comes back, but it's rather unpleasant while it's happening.
