I can't make this sh!t up

Well, I could, and people on TB have been known to do worse, but I'm not. My freaking house caught on fire last night!
I mentioned a few times previously that DH and I were converting our gas fireplace to wood burning as a Christmas gift to ourselves. We had it inspected and switched over and everything seemed to be fine. We had a fire in it last evening and around 11:00 I started noticing the smell of burning plastic. Long story semi-short, embers got through tiny cracks in the mortar, ignited an ass load of Christmas cards that had been dropped behind our mantle from previous owners of our house, burned through the floor and insulation, and would've burned the house down had I not been awake to smell it and call 911. They ripped apart our living room wall and the basement is a clusterfuck, but other than that the damage was minimal since we caught it so early.
I swear, I feel like all I do on these boards lately is complain about stuff that has gone wrong, but so much crap keeps happening. I'm so glad Carys didn't feel like sleeping last night, or I definitely would've been asleep and the damage would've been much worse. I'm looking at the bright side here! Hoping that's the worst 2014 has in store for us and it's out of the way.
