swing or bouncer?

Hi

We live in a condo/apt in Chicago and don't have a ton of space for multiple pieces of baby gear. I cannot decide if a swing or bouncer is better to have and what I will use more. I was looking at the Fisher Price snugapuppy bouncer or the snugapuppy swing, although I read that the swing's motor dies quickly. I was also looking at the Fisher Price rainforest friends space saving swing as it seems to do both, but it looks kind of junky (https://www.buybuybaby.com/store/product/Fisher-Price-reg-Rain-Forest-Friends-SpaceSaver-Swing-Seat/1041310915?categoryId=32026)

Opinions on if a bouncer or swing would be best? Does anyone have these products or a different product to recommend? I've also read that some babies don't like swings, so I don't want to waste $$ on something it may not even like.

Thanks!

  • We are really tight on space in our house (960 sq feet) so I can understand your pain. Living in the Chicago burbs, I have a lot of city friends with your same issue.

The space saver swing is actually one of my favorites. The only two downsides I can think of are that it runs on batteries, so you may be replacing them a lot and two it will only sway one direction where as the full size swings will sway two directions.

Regular swings are HUGE. We had one with DD and this time I'm only using a space saver. For myself, I prefer to have both a swing and a bouncey.

  • I have the FP My Little Lamb Platinum which is very similar to the Snugabunny.  I have also heard bad reports on the motors, but from what I understand IF your motor dies, the company will send you a replacement.  It does take up a TON of space.  Maybe look into a smaller swing?  I think Graco makes one that literally folds up when not in use, but I can't remember what it's called.  Bouncers are really just a place to "put" the baby, not really entertaining.  I would look into the smaller, portable swing.
  • Thanks...the FP one seems to cover both jobs but its just not very cute. I know the baby doesn't care about cute though!

Are you talking about the graco lx gliding swing? That one looks compact to me.

  • IMO, if I had to choose one or the other, I would get a bouncer before a swing - it was an "essential" for us with DS #1.  However, if you can manage to find space for both, then go for it.  Bouncers are convenient to have around for more than just nap purposes, and take up less space than a swing.  You can easily move a bouncer from room to room if you need a quick place to put the baby down while you do something (with DS #1, I used to sit him in the bouncer in the bathroom while I took a shower!)  Swings are nice to have for babies that like to nap with movement, but some babies HATE swings - you just never know.  If you can borrow a swing from a friend or buy one used, I would recommend that over buying one new, just in case your baby isn't a fan of swings (we've loaned our swing to 4 or 5 friends now, and half of them returned it within a week because their babies didn't like swings).  As for compact swings, we started out with a really nice portable swing for DS #1 made by Bright Starts, similar to this one:

DS really liked it, it worked quietly, and the batteries lasted a pretty long time.  Ironically, we moved this swing to my parent's house and bought a full-size swing for our place, which DS didn't like nearly as much.
