That's how you get over it!

I got over my fear of public BF in a hurry today. LO had is appointment to get circumcised and I decided to stay in the room while they did it so I could try to comfort him. It was really hard to watch but I made sure to remain calm for him. I knew that the one thing that would calm him down was to eat so after we were done we had to go and wait in the lab area because they were going to prick his foot :(. While we were waiting he was screaming and it was breaking my heart because I knew he was in pain. I whipped my boob out and started nursing and he stopped crying right away.
When your baby is hurting and you have the one thing that will calm them down, people seeing your boob is the last thing on your mind.
That's how I felt anyway!!
Just wanted to share :)

  • Good for you. I whipped my boob out in the exam room at the pediatricians office and didn't even attempt to be discreet.

  • That's what I planned on doing but then they told us we had to go out and wait in the waiting room for the lab. There were quite a few people sitting right there with us.

  • Good for you! I am nervous about nursing I'm public..... I wish it weren't so taboo.

  • Thankfully every time I've had to nurse A, I've had enough time to whip the cover out. Not that it would bother me so much, I just don't want to have to deal with other people giving me grief about not covering up.

I agree though, if A was just screaming I would just whip it out and people can get over it or turn their heads.
The cover is just so annoying to me. I use a nipple shield so to try and make sure that stays on while holding LO and then having to hold out the cover to peek into it is just ridiculous. I tried it for about 30 seconds before I told H "just take it off". He looked at me like I was crazy. Lol

  • Spending five days in the hospital while you try to learn how to nurse kind of gave me enough courage to nurse in public. By the end of my stay I didn't care who saw my boobs. I've nursed Costco and Kohl's and in the back of cars and the grocery store; doesn't quite matter to me anymore.
  • I have to bottle feed or use an SNS (think of an IV without the needle and the tubing ending at your nipple) so nursing in public is not an option for me. I will say prior to starting nursing, I would totally judge women who whipped boobs out in public and people who advocated for public feedings. But now that I have my son and have attempted BFing, I am amazed there are not more moms who don't whip it out in public.

Bfing should be something everyone should go through at least once in their life, that goes for men and women!

  • I crawled into the back of my van and whipped it out while the kid at the gas station was filling the gas tank. He had to pick his jaw up off the ground. But hey your baby is hungry and its something you have to do.

Lol, my pediatrician actually tried to help me latch in the hospital. Everybody and their mom touched my boobs in those four days! :)

Me too! She took so long to come into the room and LO was screaming so I was like oh well, I'm whipping it out! She checked her out and let me continue while she talked to us. I didn't even care, which I'm shocked about as a FTM. It felt like survival mode, you gotta do what you gotta do!

  • Good for you! I whipped it out in the pedi office today. Got a nasty look from a guy there with his small kid, the dad sitting next to me (who was with his wife) said not so discreetly "her baby is hungry, if you're uncomfortable look away!" It was awesome!

    That's awesome!!

  • I am using a cover just because it is something my SO is sensitive about. I could care less thanks to my hospital stay and always having the boob out

I think pedis are generally used to it. When DS1 received his vaccinations and was screaming, the dr suggested I nurse him to calm him down. I whipped it out and we were able to continue our conversation.
