finding the right bottle?

I switched DS exclusively to formula yesterday.  Now we are having trouble figuring out the best bottle for him.  He doesn't seem bothered by the formula itself, but we can't find a bottle/nipple that it doesn't sound like he's gagging on the entire feeding.  Gagging, or swallowing tons of air.  We've tried 3 types of bottles so far (Avent, Medela, Playtex Vent Aire), and two types of nipple (slow flow first, then medium flow), but no change.  Not only is all the gagging/air making him gassy later, but he is hardly getting any formula down during the feedings...it's taking him 20+ mins to eat 1.5-2 oz and he wants to eat every 2 hours or less.

Has anyone else dealt with this type of issue?  He was also kind of a gaggy feeder when I BF'd him too, so I'm not sure if it's more an issue of how he eats vs the type of bottle...?

Re: finding the right bottle?

  • When we first introduced a bottle to J, he actually choked a few times. I felt awful. But he's gotten the hang of it now. He is pretty gassy, yes, but I don't know that there's much to avoid that. I just kind of let him drive the feeding. I put the bottle up to him and let him suck in however much of the nipple he wanted and let him spit it out when he wanted and when he does spit it out, I burp him. If he doesn't spit it out for about an ounce, I take it and burp him.

We use the Medela bottles that came with my pump. I tried the calma nipples because he was drinking so fast, but those actually seemed to make his tummy hurt more than the "normal" nipples.

  • Dr browns! Best bottles ever! I got all bottle brands and this is the one that has the slowest nipples and really reduces gas. Once you get a hang of cleaning them it's simple. Just soak all parts in hot water and dawn and then rinse and sterilize. Simple.

  • We use Tommee Tippee. I would start with slow flow nipples. Also, I think 20 minutes for a feeding sounds about right early on.

  • Another vote for Tommee Tippee. I chose them before LO arrived and just hoped she'd do well with them and stocked up during the Black Friday BOGO on TT bottles. She eats like a champ from them and had since day 1 (though she is more BF than bottle). They also have an option like the Dr Brown bottles with an anti-colic bottles which is what we use. We have no gas issues. They are really easy to clean too. The NICU nurses actually told us they wanted to recommend them for the hospital to purchase for them to use.

  • I've been using gumdrop and doctor browns. It seems that my LO prefers the gumdrop bottles and now I can't find anymore. I found them at the baby depot at Burlington. Dr browns isn't bad, but she just prefers a regular bottle it seems...

As for the 20 min, I actually can't remember if my pedi told me or I read that a feeding should take at least 20 min and you should burp in between. It helps with not over-eating and is supposed to settle their stomachs or something like that.

  • Just sent H out for TT today. Pumped for the first time today. They didn't sell single bottles , so he came home with a 3pk of 9oz. Glad to hear the positive reviews. We 've never done both breast and bottle, so hoping it 'll work out.

  • We used Tommee Tippee for DS1 and will this time too. We tried a lot of others and these are the ones both boys prefer.

  • I use como tomo. they're awesome! they're soft like the breast and super easy to clean! you don't need a bottle brush for it. they have different size nipples , I use the slowest flow it has only one hole. I found it at Walgreens but it's also on amazon.com. I researched all the different bottles when I was pregnant to see what the closest bottles are to the breast and came across these.
